So I had a pair of Ergo's for awhile. I love them. But they started to creak real bad where the head meets the shaft. I spoke with petzl and they said they'd take care of me. They sent me a new pair which I was super grateful for. I got the new pair about a month ago and have used them a couple days drytooling but nothing super intense.
I just noticed yesterday while using them that the new pair is creaking in the same place. I have seen a previous thread on this issue with a dude's nomics but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if anyone has any insight on how I can keep this creaking from getting worse as I know it will. I thought of putting some sort of heavy duty adhesive in the shaft around the head.
From what I've seen and heard locally, this is becoming a more common issue for Bow Valley area climbers, where almost every serious ice climber has a pair of Nomics. I wish I had better information, but most people just send them back to the MEC warranty department or Petzl.
My Nomics finally started to creak this year after 4 years of hard use, including a lot of mixed cragging and some pin bashing. I did not buy them at MEC, so I am going to keep climbing on them until I hear it's unsafe and I'm gonna die.
It is concerning, but I am curious if failure at the head/shaft interface is a common problem, or if I should stop really climbing on them at this point? Petzl tool heads don't seem to be flying off left, right and centre.
I don't think we really have any options to keep it from getting worse. Sell 'em and switch to BD?
Well here's a bit of an update... I put a thick bead of superglue all around the head and that helped tremendously. Don't know if the head is still moving but if it is, I can't hear it anymore. The glue between the metals could be keeping it from making a sound so who knows...
