Hey All,

Planning to go to Shuteye Ridge next week. Any advice on access in a 2WD van? Are there any areas/ campgrounds that are easily accessed with out 4WD and high clearance?

Thanks!

I've never been there, but you know there's a new guidebook out there for Shuteye? It might answer some of your questions...

You may want to try the Mammoth Pool side of Shuteye because getting up to decent camping from the Bass Lake side is difficult without 4WD. Moreover, if it is hot out, you will cook up on the Ridge proper until things go into the shade everyday (noon-2pm). That said, being up on the Ridge proper is pretty fricking amazing...and then there is the climbing. What do you want to do? Hard sport? Long moderates?

The lower parking, for Electric Eagle etc. is accessible with low clearance/2wd. The camping is kind of lame though; just the end of the road down in the trees. Pretty reasonable approach to some amazing(!) climbing though

Camping on the big slab is uber legit

the guide book does provide specific beta about the need for 4WD to approach specific crags. It also gives the general advice that most of the crags are approachable with a 2wd passenger car.

I can't imagine going to this place for the first time without a guide book would be a very productive trip.

Would be good to have some current beta on what roads are in good shape and clear. When I called up to the ranger station a couple months ago, they had no idea as the roads were mostly all still closed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
