Howdy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good beta resource for linville gorge? Particularly the linville river crag? I've been stumped there before looking for routes on table rock... Does selected climbs NC cover the river area?

Thanks.

NC Select Climbs is pretty much the principal resource for Linville Gorge climbing. I can't remember if the old Kelly guidebook covers that crag or not, I don't think so though. The same guys who published the High Country Cragger also created a guide for the west side of the gorge but I think it's not published anymore. MP has the best beta I've seen. I'm sure some of the other guys who climb Linville a lot may have some hand drawn topos.

In regards to Tablerock, between MP and the NC Select Climbs guidebook, that area is covered really well in my opinion.

Agree w/ Jonathan. NC Select and MP should get you to most of the routes. If you need more info than is already out there, it is best to come up w/ a few goals and make specific posts about them, either here or on the CCC website. People are generally pretty knowledgeable and are always happy to help.

Have you done the classic stuff at Shortoff, NC Wall, Amphitheatre? All amazing and well described in the Select guide as well as MP.

I second Amphitheater. It's a bit more out of the way, but some great climbs that are longer. Short hike at around 6-7 miles or so round trip if memory serves me.

Raul,

What exactly were you stumped by at the River Crag? Getting there, or a route description? I'd be glad to help if you can be more specific.

This website has the most up-to-date route info for that crag.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've yet to get down to the river crag, but know that sometimes linville can be a bit weird with finding routes/trails. I've been to the amphitheater, I agree, awesome! I was thinking the river crag as a place to climb/swim when it's super hot. Have any of you climbed down there?

Raul,
The river crag is north facing, but because it sits deeper in the Gorge can be fairly warm and humid. But, the hike is great and the river makes for a fun diversion. Same great metasandstone as Hawks bill too.

The approach info is accurate and should get you there in about 40 minutes.

Is there anywhere that is not extremely hot in Linville Gorge in August? Ideally, it would have lots of moderate trad routes.

There are several areas that will stay shaded most of the day but it's still going to be warm and humid. The High Country would be a good option; Shiprock has bunch of moderate trad routes in the 1-2 pitch range.

North End of Table Rock might not be too bad. Ship and 221 crags (Sunken, Little Wilson, Dump, etc) would be better. Get and early start. Prob going to storm in the PM anyway...

Thanks for all the info.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out ship rock if I stay in nc. Haven't heard of 221 crags. I'll look on mp
