Fixed raps on Hallets

I climbed a route on Hallets yesterday and found the rap route had a fixed 10.5 rope tied to the chains on the raps. While this makes the decent faster there is no way to tell how long the rope has been there and it is tied off so you can not pull it up to inspect it for damage. I much prefer to setup my own ropes as at least I know what I am raping on. I would recommend that this rope should be removed. thanks Gordon

It's possible that this fixed line you speak off belongs to someone who has placed it with specific intentions. There are hard projects up on that wall and it's about that time that people will be up there working on their routes. There are a number of locals who have very detailed knowledge of what is going on up there and I'm sue that they know of this line, its condition and its use.

My experience with fixed lines has been that you could still negotiate around them and rap on your own line. Was this an option? Is it mandatory to use the fixed line now?

That doesn't mean it should be there. A fixed rap line has no place there, take it down.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
