Morgan Patterson wrote: dude read my post... "Headpointing is the accepted term for what the OP first described, trying something on TR and then leading it clean (red pointing). Doing something clean on TR is called TR'ing. Falling on TR is called not sending, aka falling. That hopefully helps u newer guys figure it out." Have fun debating made up words... peace out.
The OP provided two possibilities:

OP wrote:Does "tredpoint" mean redpointing after toproping, or getting it clean on toprope after previous toprope hangs? Or something else entirely?
The first -- red-point after top-roping could be headpointing. But, the term "headpointing" as I've seen/heard it used is almost entirely for trad climbs, and again, I've only really heard it so used by Brits.

For sport red-pointing, I've never known anyone to distinguish whether or not the moves were rehearsed on top-rope, on lead, or on some combination of the two before finally achieving the red-point ascent.

So, given that I'd just seen "TRedpoint" used adjacent to "TRonsight", I guessed from context that it meant the OP's second option: "getting it clean on toprope after previous toprope hangs". And, yes, some people do like to distinguish between getting a climb clean on top-rope the first time, vs after a few tries. Especially if they're coming from a gym-climbing background (as many people are, nowadays) where much/most of their climbing will have been top-rope climbing.

Looks to be on the rise. And that's not including this thread. This thread has more than doubled it's historical use. Does that mean it's been "threadpointed"?

Morgan, EVERY word is made up. Just because you find a word poor style, doesn't mean it's wrong to ask what others might mean when they are saying it, no?

And that's really what your post was about: putting down people who use a word you don't like. It's a small thing, and I'm sure you're a decent guy, but that is not especially helpful to the OP's discission, is it?

And your suggestion to use headpoint instead just seems plain wrong, looking at the portmanteau that is TRedpoint.

Zappatista, a portmanteau is a term linguists use: making a new word by combining two other already existing words. Language Log has a regular feature on them. Go read it, it's cool stuff.

Sorry you're offended by five dollar words, "used incorrectly."

I usually like the creation of new words, especially if they are funny. But this one blows, so screw it. You want to call it that, each and every time I'm going to be like, "What? Huh?"

Tredpoint?

Seriously?

Dude I know you are lying because the gym was closed on Jul 29, 2011 for a youth comp.
