anyone have experience with this (painful) injury? i hear the patella is well vascularized and heals well but the rehab appears to be long and painful. what's life like during and after rehab?

Sorry about your injury, it sounds harsh. Off the top of my head, I won't expect a fast recovery because the patella is mainly surrounded cartilages and tendons, even bones and muscles heal faster than tendons and cartilage. However, it depends on your specific injury, it could be a direct fracture to the bone or damage to tendons holding the patella, a patella fracture is the better of the two to have(I don't mean to be pessimistic)
Good luck on your recovery.

I broke my patella in my early twenties and it fully healed, quickly. With no aftereffects. I suppose it depends on your particular break, but in my case there were no complications or prolonged recovery.

Being young seems to make everything heal quickly. Hopefully that is the OP's situation.
