summer europe climbing

I will be traveling around Europe (no plans on exact locations, yet) beginning in June and would love to climb!

I lead 5.11. I will only have my harness and shoes with me, but will buy you beers if you let me climb on yours.

I'll be in turkey until june and will be down to find some spots to climb in Europe as I have my rope and draws with me.

I lead 6b+ comfortably and can get up 6c but I dont make it look good :P... however, I'm spending a month climbing in turkey so I'll probably be able to be a bit stronger afterward.

Where are you thinking about climbing and for how long? Since I've been to Kalymnos and I'm currently in Turkey I'd probably want to pass on those spots.

If you really can lead 5.11 on outdoor rock, and you bring
(a) a means of wireless internet connection and a list of a couple of major web forums for climbing in each country/language you want to visit; and
(b) a list of the climber's campgrounds where you want to visit; and
(c) a friendly + flexible + outgoing style with strangers.

then you should be able to find partners "on the fly" in Europe.
It's easier in some areas than others. And maybe not every day.

Not having your own rope could be a problem: Not because other people would not share theirs, but because it undermines the credibility of your claim to lead 5.11.

Ken

P.S. If you're serious enough to lead 5.11 outdoors, and you're going to be in Europe long enough to be traveling around randomly ... Why would you not be carrying your own rope and draws?

I too am climbing through Europe, and have all gear with me. I don't mind if we use my gear as long as you are a competent belayer. Do you have any specific plans yet?

I think you will be just fine without a rope. Travel light and have fun!

In fact just a couple of weeks ago in southern France I gladly climbed with a 5.11 leader (recovering from an injury) who had posted for partners on a European forum (not UKC and not MountainProject). He was just around for a few days for a family reunion holiday, so he didn't have any rope (nor a car).

He overcame my concerns about "credibility", and I indeed agreed to climb with him, so he led with my rope and draws. First day I insisted on starting with half-pitch cragging on some excellent rock he'd never heard of - (so despite being a "visiting American" I guess I was able to project some credibility of my own).

Second day we did what he most wanted -- esthetic multi-pitch line on sound white rock rising straight up out of the deep blue sea with a variety of interesing climbing moves.

Glad I didn't let his failure to bring his own rope hold me back.

Hey Devyn,
If you make your way over to the Frankenjura, I should be able to hook up with you for a day or two, especially during the weekend (week days could be difficult) except during the week of July 19-27, since I'm going on vacation then, which means out of the country. For the times I'm not available to climb, there are a bunch of campgrounds here where you could easily meet a group or solo person to climb with.
Drop me a line if you want to head over.

Hey Kenr,

What European forum was that? I am looking for some European forums to post on to find partners, other than ukc and rock climbing.com.

CampToCamp.org seems to work for France. I've found partners thru both the French-language and English-language forums.

Posting my own request for partners has not worked. What has worked well is responding to other people requesting partners. So I'm offering to support their goals, and explaining how I have the capabilities to give that support.

I'm not good at listening to spoken French, so when I respond to requests on the French-language forum, I start my text with sentence or two in French, then explain that I don't speak much French, and add more detail in English.

Nowadays lots of French climbers speak English. Anyway not everybody who posts on the French-language forum of C2C is French, or has French as their native language. One person said they actually preferred English (but presumably had posted on the French-language forum because lots more climbers read it than the English-language forums).

Also, I have lots of previous experience climbing around Marseille and Toulon, I own and have used all the local French guidebooks, have my own rope and gear, have a car and know how to drive to most climbing access trailheads -- which I use to help offset that I'm not very strong in leading on rock or in speaking French.

Visiting climbers who are stronger climbers but lacking in other areas likely would try a different strategy from mine.

Bear in mind that lots of the classic multi-pitch climbs around Chamonix have substantial Trad sections.

To learn about a larger number of bolted multi-pitch routes, get a modern guidebook for the Aiguilles Rouges (now available in English translation). Do not assume that the bolted routes are free from run-outs (even if some website says "well equipped"). And bear in mind that the rock on the Aiguilles Rouges side of the Chamonix valley is more breakable than the typical granite on the Mont Blanc side.

Is anyone in Spain right now? I just arrived in Barcelona & I will be in Spain for the next two weeks. I am traveling with a rope and draws. I was thinking of going to Rodellar or Siurana but I can be flexible and travel to wherever I can find a partner. I would also be willing to travel to France since I will be flying out of the airport in Paris on June 17th.
PM or send an email to britcharme89@gmail.com
Thanks

If your still looking for places to climb, then I would recommend Bulgaria. It is one of europe's hidden gems, everything is way cheaper than western europe, public transportation is reliable, english speaking partners abound, climbs of all types and grades. I have been living here for 2 years for work, and have really enjoyed it. I will be heading back to the States in a few weeks, otherwise I would show you around. Check out climbingguidebg.com for more info and partners. Hope you have a great trip!

I will be in Munich as of June 10th and would love to get together with someone to climb. I will have a rope + shoes, harness etc. but otherwise limited gear. I will also have access to a car, so could probably meet up in other places as well. Send me a IM if anyone would like to meet up.
