I have been on heaps of solo road trips in the USA, I don't even live there.

Whats rule #1 and how do you violate it?

At any major destination in the USA it is easy to find a steady stream of partners - weekday, weekend, whatever. All you have to do is be friendly, competent, and pleasant to be around.

Rule #1 is "Don't be a jerk."

Well done.

If you really want climbing partners its best to go bouldering, talk to people while climbing, find people at your own level. Its annoying when strangers come up and start talking smack when you are trying to belay or some thing.

Due to recent injuries, I cannot boulder so this is not an option. I don't typically go to the crag when travelling alone to meet partners... I meet them at mutual hang out areas and then we go to the crag together. So, I won't be approaching people who are belaying and talking smack. Haha.

Also, I disagree with your statement that I will be doing a lot of soloing. There are many ways to meet partners in the US. Of my many solo trips to crags in the area, I've never had to resort to soloing. Some areas, however, are easier to meet partners than others. That's why I asked the question.

Steve Jones wrote:A year trip, that's exciting. As a T-wall climber, you should be able to handle all the classic areas. For a year trip of the classics, I like the following (in no particular order): 1. Red Rocks (long sandstone routes, mostly trad, lots of moderates, most of which are very crowded, if you hike in 2 or more hours, the crowds thin out) 2. Rocky Mtn National Park (long granite routes, Lumpy Ridge is fun too for shorter routes, both places have moderates, Lumpy is crowded) 3. Indian Creek (sandstone, perfect cracks, crowded, desert towers too!) 4. Cochise Stronghold< AZ (granite with a wild west feel, trad and sport, uncrowded) 5. Wind River, Cirque of the Towers (granite, long, wild routes, uncrowded, long approach but worth it) 6. Squamish, BC (more perfect cracks and some fun slabs) 7. Maple Canyon, UT (unique cobbles, mostly sport) 8. City of Rocks, ID (uncrowded climbing park, granite formations and towers) 9. Needles (of California) (uncrowded gem, multi-pitch, other-worldly granite towers) 10. Toulumne Meadows/Yosemite high country (beautiful granite domes with interesting crystal knobs, lots of moderates, runout, crowded) For your situation, crowded means you can probably find a partner there. Most of these are trad areas, with some sport climbs. There should be wifi nearby for everything but the Cirque, the Needles and Toulumne. As far as I know, dogs are OK except for Rocky Mtn Park and maybe Toulumne. I learned to climb in 'Nooga, so would be glad to help you out. We may know some of the same people. PM me if you want more details,
I really appreciate you answering my initial questions!!! You're the only person who has done so. I will certainly be in touch as I acquire more details and formulate a better game plan. We probably do know some of the same Chattanooga folks (oh how I will miss the south... but I'm psyched!!)

Believe me, you won't miss the south for long.

Yeah, lame responses, but It's been done, and talked about on here, a million times.

Arizona, Red Rocks, Joshua Tree, and/or Bishop in the beginning (January).

Indian Creek/moab in the spring.

Maybe Colorado or City of Rocks?

Summer sport climbing... Maple and Wyoming.

Late summer in Squamish

Fall in California...

Standard tour I think. Fill in the gaps. Will be amazing

All your other questions are mostly a 'Yes', but a few, like finding work, will... simply and obviously depend I would say.

Go to Tensleep. Hook up with Ali if she's around, make new friends and take the rest from there.

Can you climb much at all if you can't boulder?

Obviously I can climb or I wouldn't be asking for such information. I had spinal fusion surgery a couple months ago and have to avoid high impact repetitive activities... Like continuously falling on a crash pad.

I am not sure what you mean by mutual hang out spots, where do you find these?
I hang out a lot at McDonalds for the wifi, never seem to meet other climbers there though?

There is usually a place where most people are camping. At the red, for example, it would be Miguel's. The new used to have Rodgers. T-wall has camping near the parking lot.. Same with looking glass, fosters, rock town, and many other local crags. I'm done answering your questions... That was not the point of this post.

This cat also hangs out near play grounds with a bag of candy too. No climbers there either.
