Description Suggest change

NOTE: Jon Sykes' The NOTCHES lists this as "Crawford Crack Crag"

Probably no further than 75 ft from the 3rd busiest highway in "upstate" NH (Rt 302), this true roadside crag provides several short (35-40 ft high) steep routes under Willard.

Cracks 5.10-5.11 and a 12+ arete(TR). All routes are TR but I guess could be lead (some have).

Check COMMENTs under the individual PHOTOs for Beta and climber's opinions of the grades.

Getting There Suggest change

Driving up (westbound) on Rt 302, just after the road becomes 3 lanes to climb into the notch, look left just before the "“Slower Traffic Keep Right"” sign. (I suppose you could also park here, in a tiny pullout just before the sign, but you then have to cross Rt 302.)

The best / safest parking is the same as for the Hattie’s Garden approach path. Driving up-notch (westbound) this is about 0.1 mi. before the “Slower Traffic…” sign, and is a large gravel pullout on the left just before the bridge over Saco “stream". (See the Gully #1 Buttress AREA for specific directions, if needed.)

From the Hattie’s parking, walk uphill on Rt 302 for about 2 minutes (Except for the bridge, this walking can be done on the "“grass side"” of the guardrail.) When the stream (Saco River) comes close to you on the left, scramble down and cross it, then walk another 2 minutes through open woods with some low brush, about 50 ft “inland” from the stream.

If the river is high, it is possible to walk through the woods from the parking to the crag; just start up the Hattie's Garden path for a few feet and "hang a right" through the woods, intercepting the river and staying to the left of it.
