Gunks Break-ins (west trailhead)

Yeah, mine was one. I think in most of the cars, a purse was visible. Mine was rifled through and about $5.57 stolen. Definitely not worth the $225 repair. I live in Philly and every time I leave I forget there are vandals outside of the city, too. I would never do that at home. Hopefully, lesson learned. I'm surprised to hear packs were stolen based on the info I had on Saturday.

I want to publicly thank the ranger, Andrew, who left his cell phone number on my car and helped us wrap up the door with supplies he had on hand before our 3 hour drive home. He truly made the best of an annoying situation for me.

The gunks are not safe at all. I'm going to stay at bk boulders, the cliffs and gravity vault.

17 bucks a day to get ripped off. nice.

Or $95 for the year (including biking, climbing horseback and free camping). If you choose to pay the day use fee, that's your issue.

That said, for the fees, they should be able to provide some security. Hell, even a few wifi cameras. could at least lead to an eventual arrest.

I'm not a big fan of big brother watching me all the time, but we are on camera so much these days, it makes perfect sense to install them in trail head parking lots. No need to monitor them, just review when needed.

Thats nice they offer biking now as part of a pass, they didnt do that when I was buying one year passes. That said for whatever the hell you pay to get in to the lot there should be security of some sort. Multiple cars getting hit on any one day is pathetic in a pay to use area with an actual human being collecting money.

Decided to leave nothing of value in my van today and leave my windows open. At least they wont have to break in to take a look around

According to the rangers (who are now patrolling every 45 minutes), there have no break ins since last Wednesday.

I saw a few vehicles with signs hanging on them: "there is nothing to steal in this car". I thought about putting a sign, but then I wasn't sure if they would break the window just to vandalize.

im surprised there arent any reports of people trashing / stealing at SLIME or MUA...those areas during the day are dead and easy pickens...

Fwiw, as someone with some experience and knowledge with camera systems, this is a fine thing to expect but something different to actually deploy. That camera needs to send its feed somewhere, and I doubt many trailheads have network or internet access, or even power for that matter. Assuming they had at least power, then you would need a computer there or somewhere capturing the camera feed and storing it. After a year of storing 24/7 video you'll need to upgrade the hard drive or work on some type of on/offsite backup method, etc. [some businesses only keep a few days or weeks and automatically purge older videos] Either way it's a rather complicated undertaking and not as easy as spending $50 at Staples and running an extension cable.

I wouldn't expect any preserve or wilderness area to have surveillance. I would welcome it, but it just aint happening anytime soon (when solar power and satellite/cellular internet become super cheap, *maybe* ).

A camera trap, i.e. hunters camera, would take a timestamped photo and/or video of every car that entered the lot on a given day and could do this for days on end with a single charge and mini SD card.

I know of a few people who have taken back their crags by way of force. Not advocating [too much] violence but we had a real bad problem for a while and the only thing that solved it was a little stakeout of sorts. Noticing the pattern of weekend break ins, Bill sat himself on a boulder above the parking lot one Saturday morning and waited. After a few hours had passed and he was about to leave, a black pickup truck pulls in. It was pretty obvious that the folks in the truck weren't climbers and when one got out and picked up the closest rock, Bill knew he had the enemy in sight. Before Bill could run down the hill with his small 22 rifle, the man broke a car window and began to loot. Bill tore down that hill so fast he probably sounded like a mama bear charging. When they saw him runnin breakneck speed at em with a rifle they hauled ass out of there leaving the skinny meth head looking guy standing in the parking lot alone. I wish I could tell you that Bill shot that meth head that day and buried him in a holler below the blue ridge parkway but that's not how this story goes. Police came and took him away, hasn't been a break in there since that day.

But that may not be effective for catching these criminals since they're (supposedly) not actually driving their vehicle onto preserve property.

With that thought in mind, I suppose a couple dozen of these motion detecting cameras could be deployed anywhere there might be crime. Then see my prior post. Additionally, unlike most wild animals, people might look for and destroy (steal even) these cameras. Since the images are only being stored locally, taking the camera effectively covers their tracks. And who knows, maybe they can even resell the camera. Booty!

They might be able to set something up near the (now new) gate at the stairmaster parking area. This is a spot where they parked, and a likely repeat location(?). I'll keep an eye out for the camera. If I'm short on cash, maybe eBay it.

My guess is that this was an isolated incident. But some criminals are dumb and/or greedy/desperate, so who knows. Maybe they'll be back. Maybe super volcano. Maybe asteroid.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
