Looking for Flagstaff Recommendation

Hey,

My GF and I are looking to do a little bit of easy toproping (5.7-5.9) in Flag as part of our anniversary this weekend.

We don't lead climb or have any trad gear yet, so we would need somewhere with either bolts or natural anchors that we could hike to the top of.

Also, we would only have a few hours, so we are looking specifically for somewhere that doesn't require much approach time/hiking.

Does such a place exist in or around Flagstaff?

Also, does anyone know if the fires are affecting the climbing there right now?

Thanks in advance.

Try 'The Overlook' @ Oak Creek Canyon, just south of Flagstaff on Highway 89A... just before the switchbacks begin. Definitely toproping options, as well as trad. That having been said, a quick google search for the Oak Creek Overlook is saying that at least as of two days ago, 89A is closed *at* the overlook on account of the fires... not sure if the overlook itself is open, then.

EDIT: It looks like the Overlook is probably a no-go.

The air quality is really bad right now. some of my Flag friends have come down to climb at Prescott this weekend just to get out of the smoke. The Overlook is closed and maybe getting burned. West Mt. Elden has some routes like you are looking for although the hike to the top is a bit of a drag.

Thanks for your insight guys. Maybe we'll just stay in PRC this weekend and do some normal climbing here. We've been meaning to check out the Promised Land for a while so maybe this is our chance. The only problem will be finding it.

In place of going to Flag, we are now planning to just rent a plane on Monday and fly over the area to see the damage. Haven't looked at the TFRs yet tho.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
