So, I was reading some Fred Beckey story that involved one of his partners falling off a ridge, and I think he, or one of his partners only way to protect the fall was jumping off the opposite side of the ridge, using the ridge as "pro". This got me thinking........ So........ I know seeing the world Moral/Ethic involved in internet climbing discussion just pisses me off, but this one is of absolute seriousness and quite a dilemma...... In the mountains, shit goes bad......... when is it okay to cut the rope on your partner and GTFO the mountain?

Definately didn't fall 2000 feet but I think Simon held him there for quite a long time, ten hours or something. Maybe thats the rule. After ten hours you can go ahead and joe simpson your partner.

You may want to put a *SPOILER ALERT* tag in your title for this thread now. ;) It has been a while since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure Joe never blamed Simon for cutting the rope. He says Simon did the right thing, and defends him against the criticism he's received from other climbers.

If you paid attention to the movie, Joe says he had to once cut his partner free.

I find it's usually best to let your partner try the crux 3 or 4 times before resorting to cutting the rope. Although if they're doing something really annoying like wearing capris then I often only give them one take before they get the chop.

Sometimes it's best to skip cutting the rope and just bleed your partner, real quiet-like

jeff lebowski, that's the most asinine thing I've ever heard. If'n you're even CONTEMPLATING partnering up with Mr. ManCapris, then you're basically getting what you've paid for. Might as well top the day off with some Coke Zero and a Nickleback show. Like the Gandhi once said, BE the change you want to see in the world...unless your bestie issa fashion tragedy. In which case, open a vain, yo, and end it all now...
