Buy Andy a coffee at his website. I bought him 5. The lad needs supporting. Making a living from writing, even if you are brilliant like Andy, is really difficult these days.

All the best,

I paid $35 for Cold Wars, which he had signed, which was nice, but only worth $10-15. Also, if a climber is asking for drinks, ask for a beer-not a $5 coffee, eh. Make your own coffee. Kudos for having a family without a job, tho. Gotta climb hard to do that

Andy is a great writer and climber, his blog has provided me with hours of entertainment and education. Contribute!

What is it about his writing that you enjoy so much? I don't know the guy and haven't read much but the latest blog post was pretty weak, I thought. Kind of Grey's Anatomy-esque with a lot of dyfunctional, clueless thinking followed by a feel good ending but ultimately lacking any substance. Kind of like just about everything else I read related to climbing or anything really.

Poopy,

There is something about his writing style I enjoy. It's like your having a conversation with a slightly manic, very funny man who has some very good stories to tell. Also, I am unfailingly impressed that someone who is extremely dyslexic, has no grasp of grammar, and obviously cannot spell for shit can write as well as he does.

This one is, IMO, quite funny, and really showcases what I like about his writing.

I'm confused. Are we supposed to support this guy because he likes to climb and write and doesn't want to get a job?

I'm a damn good writer. I used to climb and write and not work. But then I realised that I wanted to make money!

I'm all for the guy following his passion and if he wants his readers to have the ability to donate money then so be it, but I seriously doubt he needs or wants you to try and persuade the rest of the internet to support him.

Much too much of this kind of thinking in Boulder. Great, you like to.... (climb, ski, make "art", beer, coffee, insert trendy bullshit here)- so do I. If you can't make a living off of it without asking me for things, find a real job and make it your hobby.

Asking is fine, it's how freelance creative types make their living. Just provide something compelling enough for me to pay for.

I just noticed House's 'Training for the New Alpinism' is the same price as Andy's anecdotal books

Damn! $11.49 for a Kindle copy? Sold! I was mildly interested after other comments about it, but assumed it was 50-60 dollars. Thanks to your comment and a 4 second amazon search I am now the proud owner of an electronic copy.

I'd buy him 10 coffee's just for the "Patagonian Winter" part of "Psyche". I barely watch climbing videos anymore, but I'll watch that over and over. Fucking Hilarious. Throw him a buck or don't, a guy like that is going to land on his feet.

Thanks for the plug Mick!

Just to clarify, I just have a 'buy me a button' widget at the bottom of article and blog posts on my website, to help pay for hosting and the time it takes 'to be arsed' writing stuff for free instead of for paper/online mags, and no one is forced to pay anything, or even enjoy what I write (apologies for 'Grey's Anatomy-esque' style - I do try to conform to the modern airbrushed macho willy waving standard, but often reality does not match the ideal for a 42 year old climber who's trying to live a normal life, while still climbing stuff like this : )

I guess the problem with the free online economy is that by-enlarge 95% of it is garbage, filler or advertorial, so anything that helps pay for something worth while writing has to be a good thing.

Even better, support Andy's Kickstarter project: Me, Myself & I - the dark art of big wall soloing

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
