A third peak in the Whitney Zone?

If you had a three-day weekend and were planning to do Fishhook Arete on Russell, the East Face on Whitney (we've done the East Buttress already) and were looking for a third quality route to do in the area, (regardless of elevation, but preferably on a third peak), what would you recommend?

Obscure is not a problem. Harder than 5.9 probably is. Don't want to hike for days, but would walk a few miles for good stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Do Mithral and Fishhook.

We joked about doing keeler, but really, we'd probably be in over our heads. Mithral would be something we'd have to evaluate after fishhook, but what a beautiful line...

I suppose it's an issue of whether you're more interested in summits or routes. My suggestion would be to do Mithral, especially since you're right there. Day Needle is supposed to have an OK 5.9 on it, though I've never heard of anyone doing it. Carillon has a couple of routes on it SW face (guessing it's the SW--you look up at it while you're hiking up toward Boy Scout. Carl Heller is supposed to have an awesome, long class 3 arete, but you need to hump over the Russell/Carillon col, head past Tulainyo (sp?) Lake and wander a ways to reach it. I'd say to pull out the Secor guide, start reading and see what sounds interesting.

The Impala is fun, with a 5 pitch 5.7. Not a stand out summit per se, but a good extra climb on the hike out. Done from UBSL.

The Impala!

I'd forgotten about that. I meant to walk around the other side of Carillon the last time I was up there by myself to check that face out, but the weather turned sour on me. At the time, I was coming down from Russell and was going to scramble down to Tulainyo lake to circle around Carillon, but obviously that's not the best approach. Perhaps I'm mistaken in the location of the Impala...can you see it from UBSL?

I like that idea. We've scoured Secor a number of times before past trips... Amazing how many routes there are that you never see mentioned anywhere else. I always can't help but think it would be good to hear from someone other than Secor about the quality of the route before getting on it tho. :)

Secor lists a "South Ridge" route on Russell that goes at 5.7 from the low point between Whitney and Russell to the East Summit of Russell...anyone ever do that?

Thanks!

It's really just an extension of Carillon. It is the tower that sits just to the right of the approach scree when going to Russell Carillon Col from UBSL. Good view of the route from the approach past LBSL. Easy walk off.

Sounds good. Actually sounds like a good warm up... Thanks!
