Sorry I won't be able to make it, but thank you all so much for putting in this effort in a great setting. Enjoy and maybe see you next year!

Sorry about the link - not much information on the Facebook page anyway - we will probably have the group campsite Fri/Sat nights. We usually start work fairly early Sat morning.

Since we are focusing outside the main canyon this year maybe one of the ringleaders will post up instructions for where to meet? If I hear anything I will also post here...

I have not talked to leejenkins in a couple of days..i guess he's climbing. But I would say still meet at the main area and then maybe shuttle there gear to Rock Garden ? it's not a long walk, but with bolting gear ???

Just a guess

I hope to take drill team over to Witches canyon..it really needs some help.. we re did a few routes and never even got to the main area...just horrible stuff.home made hangers of unknown age... 1/4" chain .. etc

I got a kegger and a case of beer ( bombers) as donation from our friends at San Luis Valley brewing in Alamosa..

People are asking what to bring-

for re bolting..a beater rope, short is fine,, SLINGS.. beater biners. hammer, adjustable wrench WATER

for food stuffs - i prefer finger foods, things like salads tend to go bad quickly. napkins,,, plates/bowls..big spoons.. etc

If you want to learn about bolting, we will have people that have placed and replaced THOUSANDS of bolts

and some one please a cooler of clean bagged ice.. there is never enough

Ericka-- You are drilling this year !!!

Still a few days off, but it's looking like there might be some pretty good rain in the valley this weekend. What's the threshold for postponing? Right now it's 70% chance for Fri night and 50% chance for Sat (wunderground, Del Norte).

Sometimes it can be pouring everywhere except the canyon I realize. Of course the 1st year we had epic rain, snow, hail, sun, locusts, etc and we still got a ton of work done. :)

John - I will learn to drill if you come up with me to teach! It's probably more interesting than being the master belay slave and go-fer (I don't mind doing that either).

We'll go with your weather forecast! Not sure which group site - I think Lee is going to be there early Friday. We will be down late Friday night. I will bring rain gear to guarantee it stays dry. Looking forward to seeing everyone! :)

Is there a fund for contributions to offset the costs of bolts etc.?

Unfortunately I can't participate in person, but I'd be happy to make
a contribution. I've never climbed at Penitente either, but hope to
soon.

Hi Adrian - per Lee Jenkins, you can donate through ASCA:

safeclimbing.org/help.htm

Make checks payable as per instructions in the above link and add "for Penitente Canyon" in the comments section.

Thanks!

Edit to add: hope you can make it to the canyon at some point - it is a super special place.

Thanks for the beer Sat night John! Too bad we couldn't keep the rain away. We had a great group this weekend - with lots of new people who were experiencing the canyon for the first time! I have been adding to the route comments to reflect some of the work that was done (I don't have a complete list - maybe someone else does?)

The group got into the Rock Garden and did quite a bit of work on Sunday - there are at least a couple of routes that now have anchors (one that had no anchor at all and a couple that had terrifying anchors). Still a LOT of work to do in that area.

While ASCA donated quite a bit of hardware, we went through that pretty quickly (especially anchors) and, as in years past, much of what was installed was supplied by the people doing the work out of their own pockets.

I would challenge the climbing community to consider what you pay for a single day at the gym, or post-climbing beverages, and maybe direct a small donation of that amount to ASCA to help defray the costs of projects like this one. I get the sense that people do want to contribute, but don't always know how, and donating to ASCA is one way to help with maintaining these areas that we all use, and the fixed hardware that we trust our lives to. It is even tax deductible!

Any rebolt events planned for 2015?

john strand · · southern colo · Joined May 2008 · Points: 1,640

I think a september time would work better...? More stable weather and more time to fund raise ( kickstarter or similar ) ?

Anyone ??

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
