NRG rest day hiking

Heading down to the New for five days next week and planning to have at least one rest day (though it looks like the rain might have other ideas). Anyone have any recommendations on nice hiking trails that aren't crazy strenuous? Any other noteworthy rest day activity suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks!

There is a nice trail along the top of Endless Wall. There is a trail at Nuttelburg below Beauty Mtn, complete with historical signs and restored mine equipment, and the Kaymore mine trail is nice and has a good deal of history on it. Also, there is a new trail from below the bridge to Hawk's Nest.

These are all short hikes, the longer ones are in Cranberrysuch as the North South trail.

How has the weather been down there?

Near perfect for the past 3 weeks. Will probably rain this weekend.

I second everything that Steve says. Even if it rains there are places to climb.

Given our skill level we will most likely be spending our time in Sandstonia and hopefully Orange Oswald in summersville. Anyone know how those crags are in the rain?

The trail upstream from Stonecliff campground is nice and easy. Thurmund is worth a walk thru, as there is alot more there than Kaymoor and Nuttleburg. The trail across the river from Thurmond is worth hiking as well.

Very wet. Neither crag is sheltered from the rain at all. NRG has very limited options for sub-5.10 sport climbing, even fewer options for sub 5.10 climbs that stay dry.

Rico Suave Buttress stays dry, but it's always a shit show on rainy days. Last time I was there in the rain there were 15+ people waiting on the 4 sheltered routes (they go at 11, 11, 10, 11). Bring a trad rack - there's a 5.7 flake sandwiched between them. If you can top that out, you get to the bolts and chains above the first 11. Bring your own quickdraws if you plan on setting a top rope - DO NOT run your rope directly through the rappel rings.

There are a smattering of 7, 8, 9 routes around the rest of Bubba City besides Sandstonia as well - search for them via MP or your guidebook. No idea if they stay dry or not.

If it's going to rain, just get in your car and drive a couple more hours to RRG. It is WAY more beginner friendly and there are numerous crags that stay dry in the rain. I've been there in monsoon conditions and climbed 8 full hours every day.

I've certainly heard that RRG is a better destination for moderate sport routes, but it seems like the New would have plenty to keep us occupied for 5 days (probably a lot more really). Unless the weather makes it impossible. What are some of the drier areas at RRG if we did end up there? I really appreciate the input, guys!

Orange Oswald dries extremely quick after a rain storm due to it's open and airy location. There are plenty of places that dry quick here for all skill levels it just takes some looking. If you get here and it's wet then head to WaterStone and ask the people there for dry places. Or hell shoot me a PM and I'll get you out to dry places.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
