(Slightly OT) Hangboarding - How do you kill the 3 minutes between sets?

I've been learning to skateboard in my basement with my kids board. I suppose a shattered wrist would slightly impede my training, but what the hell.

Anyone else do anything fun/productive?

I've got an extensive collection of Full House episodes on vcr and a working vcr player.

honestly, i am so busy shuffling weight plates, brushing chalk off the holds, sanding down any rough spots on my fingers, writing down how i did on the set, projecting the weight for next workout's set, etc, that it goes by pretty quickly.

This is my exact 3-min ritual as well.

Yeah, what slim said.
Write down set, change weights, chalk up, catch breath, and try to get my psyche ramped for the next set. That eats my 2-2.5 mins.

Oh and throw the devil horns cause I'm always rockin the metal, and give a few Ronnie Coleman-esque shouts like "LIGHTWEIGHT!!!" and "everybody wanna be a rock climbah but don't nobody wanna lift this HEAVY ASS WEIGHT...I do though YEAAARRRGHhhhh!!!!"

flip the slayer tape to the 2nd side after the 3rd grip position? ;) (thank goodness for the ipod - one less thing to have to do)

My breaks are 2 minutes between sets, 4 minutes between grips, but I spend that time desperately trying to calm my panic and relax, often close to tears, and sometimes praying out loud to a higher power.

i do those things too, but it is part of my multi-tasking.

This is a great question, and it might be useful for some people as an indicator of intensity.

I find that earlier in the phase I'm less worked by each set, and so the rest periods seem a bit long and its not unusual that I get a bit bored. By mid-way through the phase (and on through the end) I'm desparate for every second, and its a struggle to get my breathing under control before the next set, while attending to all the minutia slim and will described perfectly. [Granted, the break between sets 1 & 2 of an exercise is less hectic than the break between Set 3 and Set 1 of the ensuing exercise, etc. Also, I train at 7400' above sea level, so breathing may be more of an issue for me.]

If you find you're able to recover casually between sets, you might consider upping the intensity (or resistance in this case). That said, err on the side of caution (err on the side of using too LITTLE resistance, not too much). You'll have plenty of time to get worked later on down the road :)

Here's a blog post I wrote a while back on Training Intensity if you want some more clues about how "hard" your workouts should feel. This is also discussed on p. 117-8 of the RCTM.

EDIT TO ADD:

I'm all about the Maiden and Metallica. Ride the Lightning is not my favorite album, but the raw/under-produced sound is perfect for inspiring the Clubber Lang training dungeon mentality that I find perfect for hangboarding. If Seek and Destroy comes on at the beginning of a set, I know I'm going to crush. Same for Run to the Hills or The Trooper...

tell bennie to go adjust himself, you have more important things to do!

kind of a funny music related story. i used to make my playlists on the bus ride home. one night i didn't have time to do that, so i just decided to pick an old playlist. for my warmup, i just listened to my usual warmup music (maybe johhny cash or 50 cent, can't remember). so, just before i am about to start my real workout, i click the playlist (expecting slayer or dimmu borgir or something heavy). chalk up, go to hit the 4 finger open crimps.... fucking MADONNA, WTF?????

i immediately abort, go over and look at my laptop. the playlist is all jacked up. i think the next song was something by amy winehouse. i looked through my other old playlists, they are all jacked up. Itunes (as usual) totally scrambled everything. one of the many reasons i hate itunes and wish i had bought a non-Ipod MP3 player.

another thing i do between sets - i have graphs of my previous workouts, so after my set is over i plot the point. if i was successful the point is 'solid' if i failed the set, the point is just the outline of the shape (diamond/circle/triangle/whatever). this allows me to get a quick visual and compare against previous workouts, which helps motivate me.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
