Hiding from the wind in Joshua Tree...

Headed to Josh this weekend as "Plan F" for the weekend, and short of hunkering down in a bunker, where are some good wind-sheltered areas? Preferably looking for crack climbs in the 5.10-5.12- range. In spite of Josh being Plan F, still mega stoked to get on some classics!

Thank you!

Real Hidden Valley and the Wonderland of Rocks are a good place to start and have the climbing you are looking for. However, nothing is guaranteed regarding the wind there. Fortunately, if you just keep trying a new area until you find shelter, you will find shelter eventually.

Stop by at Nomad's and ask them for their flyer handout. They have them for different types for weather. One is for sheltered climbing.

Heart of Darkness is nice & sheltered.

Or quit being such a wimp and go climb whatever route you want regardless of the wind?

Just a thought.

I have found, on windy days after a weather system is blowing past.. that

Perpetual Motion.... works. The base in in a well protected hole for the crew, its only when you top out that you realize that the wind is blowing 40++++

And if you go to PM.... take some time to look around, you might just find one of the coolest native places that still exist untoutched. (cause the NPS hase not found it!)

Janes Addiction is a good sport/steep climb that is out of the wind.

have fun

Gotta say, you socal/Nevada/Arizona folk are kinda whimpy. If it's not 70 and 0% humidity or just god awful hot, you seem to think the world ended. My biggest issue at J-Tree was the fact that there basically are no trees, not in the sense of shade. You bake all day.

The weather out there isn't sunny and calm like 2 days a year, I'd just stay home and do some stuff that probably needs to get done.

J. Serpico. You bake in the sun all day, unless you go find shade under the rocks.

I do love the NY forest.... esp in the fall.

Big time winds yesterday and the climbing was FINE!
