There is a wild fire spreading through the New River Gorge right now. I haven't been able to gather any information (I don't live there) but it looks like it's pretty bad.

Here's a picture from Instagram:

Anyone know any specifics?

Wow, I didn't think it was ever dry enough in NRG for a fire start! Hope it isn't too bad.

Yes. We were out above the hole today for a while and got a lot of photos. From what we know the fire started some time yesterday or last night and was seen below the party buttress. Today we watched it spread to well over fern creek all the past diamond point and within 100 yards of the train tracks. It seems too that the fire was just a brush fire seeing how fast it spread, and how it burned through an area quickly and didn't seem to be touching most of the trees. It looked a lot like what controlled burn looks like. Then again we were a top the hole and it could have been a napalm shit storm over there.

Also Mikey's blog on the whole incident today. He was out there as usual watching the world burn to the ground and usually knows what he's talking about when it comes to nature and stuff.

According to this link it is now open again. Has anyone been out to confirm?

Also, how does fire affect the integrity of the bolts and ladders around the area?

I was out there yesterday and everything is good to go, bolts, ladders, etc.

FYI, apparently as a result to the fire, the AAC campground no longer allows fires at individual campsites, but only at the communal fire pits... So plan accordingly.

Not sure if that's true. Was down there before the fire and they had this rule in effect. Either way, still plan accordingly.

Regarding the fire restrictions at the AAC, both of you guys are right. We were starting to phase out individual campsite fires from the beginning of this season. The fact that the campsites don't have a lot of flat ground resulted in a lot of half-assed fire rings being built that were just sort of rolling down the hill from the moment they were made. Plus, we've put quite a bit of time and resources into the communal fire rings.

After the Endless wildfire, however, it was just a reminder that forest fires can happen even at the New River Jungle, and it made it all the more critical to let campers know that we're limiting fires to the permanent pits.

Thanks,
Paul
