Red Rock Approaches

Hey guys,

I was wondering if any locals could give me information about the type of approaches at Red Rock. Looking mostly for First and Second Pullout, Calico Basin and Sandstone Quarry. Are they steep? How long of a hike?

I have a muscle disease and my muscles usually crap out on the approaches here in New England due to crags being halfway up mountains. I'm trying to figure out if my body will also crap out before even getting to the walls out in Red Rock. I've done some climbing in St. George and the approaches were mostly flat and under 15 minutes. Other than that, I have no comparisons. Thanks in advance!

The approaches aren't long at most crags in the calico hills area. All the pullouts you mentioned are in those areas. A few require some scrambling or up to a 20 min / 30 min approach tops. If you pick the closer crags you should do fine.

That's the answer I was hoping for. Thanks!

Between First & Second pullout, Meetup wall would be a fairly typical worst case scenario approach. I'll post GPS data for that one, so you can judge for yourself.

Meetup Wall GPS: connect.garmin.com/activity…

I have some other GPS data, most of which the elevation gain numbers are insane, either because I forgot to shut off the unit before driving home... or whatever. So use a topo map to estimate elevation on these.

Black Corridor GPS: connect.garmin.com/activity…
Hamlet GPS: connect.garmin.com/activity…

Black Corridor and some other options at Second pull out are mostly downhill on the way in with a bit of hiking back up on the way out.

A lot of the stuff I like in Calico - Cut your teeth, the Fox, Big Bad Wolf - are also a significant hike similar to the Meetup wall approach. While others - existential wall - are mostly flat approaches.

Huge amounts of calico bouldering are mostly flat approaches.

I haven't been to sandstone quarry much.

Are there any approaches you are particularly curious about?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
