Bringing dogs into Canada

Thinking about making my first trip to Canada this summer and have a dog - anyone know the procedures needed to bring the dog into Canada, and then back into America (which I assume is the hardest part since getting back in always seems harder). Thanks!

I believe you need proof of rabies vaccination and you're good. How close are you to the border?

Yes - you are required to have a rabies certificate for your dog that you can easily get from your vet.

I've taken my lab across the border about 6 times and have only been asked for it twice.

I didn't have a problem with it when I did it in '11/'12, just make sure they're up to date on all their shots, and you have proof. You need to fill out some simple paperwork too.

Thanks! In Durango, CO - so quite far for anything to go wrong at the border. I'll be sure to have her documented shots. Thank you.

if it's a pit bull you will not be allowed to enter.

That's interesting, she is indeed a pit mix but she's small and could get away with being marked as a Lab mix. If she's marked as a lab / pit mix would we be turned away? That seems so crazy.

I would contact Canadian coustoms and check before you get turned back.

I drove up with the recommended Health Certificate (within 30 days) and proof of vaccinations for my pup and they didn't ask to see them. Get those documents just in case but you probably wont be bothered.

Pit-bull restrictions only apply to Ontario.

Thanks for that tidbit.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
