I wear about a 10.5 street shoe as well and I wear a 42 in the tc pros. Thats pretty much all day comfort right there.

@ T Howes

Thought I would post since we have the same length of foot. I also wear 44.5 in Nepals and I wear a 43 in TC Pros. Another guy wears 42 for a 10.5 foot. This just goes to show that our recommendations can only get you in the ballpark. Hopefully you can try them on somewhere.

So . . . here's the linear regression on the data points from this thread and from backcountry.com reviews:

Linear Regression of TC Pro Sizing

EDIT: Found a few more data points online and added them. The equation is y=31.2+1.08x, where x is your street shoe and y is the TC Pro size. Putting in 12 spits out 44.1, but I still might order the 44.5's as well and return the one I dislike. As you can see, there are plenty of data points away from the line.

Holy fuck dude...actually you can take out 2-3 data points & everything else will lie within .5 euro size of the line. Still, I can size mine half euro size larger or smaller depending what I'm trying to do.

I'm really confused about the TC Pro. I can't seem to get a comfortable fit.

My normal shoe size is around 11-11.5. My first pair of TC Pros, I bought the smallest size that my feet fit in (44), figuring they would stretch a bit. After at least a dozen sessions in the gym, they were still so painful it was silly. So I exchanged them for 44.5. Another dozen gym sessions and a few days outdoors... and it's not going to work. One good pitch at Big Rock last weekend and I was almost screaming.

I now have a pair of 45s. They aren't broken in yet, but they also feel too short - maybe great for gym climbing, but I'm planning to spend some time in Yosemite next month (first time!) and I can't imagine wearing it for 4 hours, especially on the low-angle upper parts of snake dike. Any bending of the toebox puts a ton of pressure on already curled toes.

Do I try another half-size up? I'm afraid the rest of the shoe is starting to feel a little loose; I can't imagine this is a good idea.

Do I give the 45s some time to stretch? Time is starting to run out; I need a comfortable and broken-in pair of shoes in about a month. I manage 2-3 afternoons a week in the gym. How long should I give it before I return my third pair to rei (sigh)?

Do I give up on this shoe model? I actually like the way it performs, although I don't have a lot of experience with other shoes (just a thoroughly abused pair of 5.10 spires). From the pressure points, I get the strange feeling that the TC Pro wants my big toe to be much longer relative to the other toes. I'm not looking for luxury, I just need something I can stand in all day.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Sounds like you don't have "sportiva shaped feet", i.e. narrow and tapered at toes. Try Five.Ten or Tenaya shoes. Something flat lasted and stiff should perform as well as TC Pros. If you are concerned about scratching your ankles, just wear thin socks or tape your ankles.

I wear a 12 street and approach shoe (45.5 or 46 ish) 44.5 stretched to be my all day flat toes shoe. 44 is PERFECT for steep face and slab goodness.

I have wide, non-pointy feet and Sprotiva is my go-to shoe for most things. The mythos don't work for me but Katanas and TC Pros fit my wide and blunt foot really well. Miuras are a bit tighter but still very good. 5.10, aside from Mocs, are far too narrow for my feet. Not sure where people get the sportiva = narrow thing from but I've worn and sold a LOT of climbing shoes and 5.10 is almost always the more narrow shoe.

This may or may not help but i would say average US street shoe size for me is 9.5
and these are my sizes in some comparable things.

Mocs us 8
TC pros 42 (all day comfy)

I have size 13 feet that are extremely high volume and very wide. I know what you mean about the pointiness of the shoe and the discomfort.

I will say that the shoes continue to stretch out. My 45 TC Pros started out almost unbearable beyond one pitch. Now they let all except my pinky toe lay totally flat and comfortable. My second toe is almost as long as my big toe and the leather has stretched enough so there's a little bubble in the front of the shoe from that toe. I'm really looking forward to resoling them and not having to break in a new pair.

You might want to consider buying a separate synthetic shoe that will be the right size, right now if you need immediate comfort and performance. Appropriately sized Anasazis might be exactly what you need. I doubt sizing up with the TC Pros will give you good long term results. Keep the TC Pros and continue climbing single pitches in them. Those shoes are like a long term relationship. Things start out awkward but soon they'll be all comfortable and you'll just wander around your house naked, the TC Pros won't even care.

I'm gonna revive this one more time. I currently wear 10-year old, 5-resole mythos in size 42 and I can wear them all day on multipitch. I don't have them anymore but I'm 95% certain I used to wear the lace-up miuras in a 43 -- they were tight and I would always take them off between pitches. Street shoe is roughly 11.5, but that's always hit-or-miss anyways. I'm thinking 43 or 43.5 for the TC pros. Suggestions?

Special shout out to csproul who gave two different answers two years apart.

Some more info for the database (also on sizesquirrel):

Street shoe: 10.5 US
Phantom Guide: 44.5
Katana Lace: 43 (snug but not super tight, take them off between pitches)
TC Pro: 43.5

TC pros are sized for multipitch trad climbing. Not sloppy loose, but pretty comfy. Could go to 43 if more precision was required, but then they'd be less comfy and I have my Katanas for that kind of stuff.

For database/reference:

Street shoe: 8.5 on Brannock Device (wear 8.5-9.5 depending on brand/use)

  • TC Pro: 40 (all day, comfy); 39 (tight, edging is too easy, off at belays whenever possible)
-these shoes stretch A LOT. The 39 will probably become my all day shoe after more stretch and a resole.
  • Katana lace: 40 (single pitch, or off at belays, not much stretch IME)
  • Miura VS: 39 (single pitch, or off at belays)
  • Anasazi Blanco: 8 (single pitch, or off at belays)
  • Anasazi VCS: 8.5 (Comfy, Occasionally wear w/ socks)
  • Arrowhead: 9.5 (Comfy, don't rush to get them off)
  • Instinct VS: 40.5 (Crushingly tight. Good for bouldering, but TOO tight, should've gotten 41).
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
