GPS Coordinates

Since smartphones with GPS capability are becoming more common it may be helpful to add a gps coordinates option with the route description? It may be helpful to new climbers and those new to an area.

I believe that's already an option, at least for areas. Not sure how helpful it would be for specific routes.

I have often thought that too but large rock walls will significantly decrease the accuracy of the GPS unit. The rock wall will often block out half the sky which decreases the signal to the satellites for triangulation which will impact the accuracy of the reading. This is probably why there is only a spot for the crag GPS point instead of routes. It would be hard to find a route when the GPS unit is a 30m accuracy as opposed to 1-3m accuracy.

To follow up on this post from 2012,  now 2019...why is that the app will not show you actual locations of a route? Not sure for how many years the "Add GPS location" has been on the app and how many dozens of times I've entered the location for each route I frequent in the local areas, but its been there for a long time and has had loads of good data entered. Why does this feature not provide useful direction? Seems so easy to be able to point the climber to the base of a climb with the coordinates or at least post the coords. Would love to understand why, or what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

I have been adding GPS coordinates in the descriptions or comments on routes. Would be helpful if that part was a first class citizen. Many big cliffs the routes are far apart from each other and hard to find. 

Following up on this old post... could we please see individual climbs on the area maps in the app?  It would be extremely convenient to see at least some climbs (when zoomed in), in addition to the areas and sub-areas currently shown.  Then, when you walk up to a wall, you could just open your app and see where you are, rather than having to find other climbers (if any are present), and ask the age-old question, "which climb are you guys on?"

There is data available already, and at least partly shown on the website -- for example, the "Climbing Map of Penitente - Inner Canyon" web page shows locations of 5 individual climbs.  I assume those points come from people using the "Add GPS Location" button that Matt mentioned.  But the data just doesn't appear in the app.  And it isn't given in the .csv export from the website either.

Locating the start of the climb is a skill and part of the challenge.

Hi everyone, I'm building a website that has all of these climbs at the moment. I was able to find all of the lat/long info from the html of the individual pages, and I'm working on getting it scraped. I've only got screenshots from development, but hopefully I should have something useable up in the next few weeks that will let you search most of the climbs on here by location, grade, rating, etc. I'll post back here when I do in case anyone is interested.

How might Mountain Project interface with FATMAP? Idk, that might be too awesome.

Will Butler, Fatmap might be interesting, need to look deeper into it. I would like for this data to be freely accessible, and I will also be implementing a public api so that people can build their own apps from the data.
