damn that pay is awful |
Cheap bastards. Let's hope they give medical at that rate. |
You would think with the Preserve charging $15 a head to climb that they could pay the rangers more than that. Walmart pays more than that. |
Then again, would you rather hang out at the gunks checking out climbers, or in Walmart checking out "OMFG!"? |
Could always sell a little weed to supplement the 11 bucks an hour. I do hope that are perks with that "salary". |
Thanks for the find. |
not sure why anyone would want to be a ranger, especially at that pay rate. |

The Preserve position is a part-time (~3 days/week) seasonal job paying $11/hr right from the start, so a lot better than Walmart, even if the working conditions and nature of the job aren't considered. This is not to justify the particular pay rate, which I agree sounds pretty low. However, the Preserve pay does meet the $10.10/hr standard for a living wage for a single person in Ulster County. (But of course that standard is for full-time workers working 2,080 hours a year.) It is in line with the typical hourly wage for someone in "personal care and services" and higher than the typical hourly wage for people in "food service and preparation." See livingwage.mit.edu/counties… The ranger can expect to earn about $7400 for the April to October season, with about four days a week to climb and/or or work at something else. According to the the livingwage site referenced above, a single person needs a total living wage of about $21,000 a year in Ulster County, so the ranger is going to have to have some other significant sources of income/support. |

Passable for the young looking to do the lifestyle climber thing....for the short term. |
I did the job for several years through graduate school and thought it was just fine. Sure, cleaning the Uberfall toilet and interacting with the occasional hostile visitor sucks, but I'd laugh to myself and think "how many Ph.d. candidates out there have ever done this before." If the pay was higher I would have dropped out and never finished my dissertation. It's like mountain guiding - the job is usually so good that if the pay were better everyone would do it. |

Because: - Red Rocks Scenic Loop late exit rule -Any state/national park trail that allows 1200lb roto-tillers aka horses but no mountain bikes because they ruin the trail -Any state/national park that allows horses but no dogs, because horse shit everywhere is somehow better than dog shit. -Any ranger that wakes you at 3am and asks for your permit because you're supposed to be in the bivy 300' away, even though both are unoccupied. You're going to say they don't make the rules it isn't their fault, but they do enforce them and no one forced them to take that job = douchebags. |

I'm going to say that none of your grievances have anything to do with the Gunks. |
