I am hoping to head up to Sneffels in about a week. I'm expecting to have to ski in from wherever i can get the jeep to. I was planning to climb birthday chutes instead of the snake because id expect it to look pretty avalanchy. Anyone know the conditions up there or maybe have some fun alternatives for a snow climb? Looking to kill off 2-3 days only intending to use crampons and an axe

Sounds like fun you should know that the road is closed with a gate at senator gulch but it will be plowed all the way up toward yankee boy basin due to the mining activity. It may be plowed as far as Gov't basin but I don't know for sure.

Did you go? How was it? I'm Thinking about doing the Snake at the end of the month. Trying to get a feel for conditions

CAIC 3-11-14: Moderate Avy danger. Seems like spring conditions are starting to arrive here in the San Juans. Hopefully the County starts plowing up to Yankee Boy soon, and gets the gate open. Birthday Chutes should be relatively safe. Just watch out for warm slabs mid-day. I get pretty avy-scared so I agree that the north-facing Snake could still be spooky. You could also climb to Lavender Col from the north side via the East Couloir. I think the ski in is still long as likely the FS road is not yet plowed. Hopefully we get lots of snow in the next several weeks so all the above could change soon. Really its still winter here so skis and skins may yield more fun than ax/crampons...
Good luck!

Hoping to head up next weekend and check out the snake couloir. Anyone have eyes on it? Anybody been up there recently?

Bump. Anyone know what things are like on Sneffels?
