Hey guys, I could use some advice on my next harness. I am deciding between the bd focus and the aspect. Although I don't do any ice climbing I am leaning towards the aspect because of the adjustable legs and the option for ice clippers (I would use them for trad gear) what do you guys think? Is it pointless to compromise breathability and get a 4 seasons harness if I will only use it for rock or is it singing that I will be about the same between the two?
Hi John, I started using the Aspect this winter for ice after using another brand for several seasons before. The Focus is essentially the Aspect without ice clippers slots. If you think you will use the ice clipper slots then I'd pick up the Aspect. They harnesses are the same price and even if you don't wind up using the slots they are not intrusive at all. Regarding the Aspect I find it to be pretty comfortable even when weighted down with a large rack of gear or in semi-hanging belays. The waist buckle takes several days of use to loosen up, before then it is a bit tricky to loosen when wearing but mind you this is also with gloves on in below freezing temps. The accessory cord loop in the back is handy but I find that the nose of biners can catch on it making removal mildly annoying sometimes but again this is also with gloves on since this is my ice harness
If you have any other questions about it feel free to PM me.
I used to think I liked adjustable legs on my harnesses, until I got a well fitting comfortable harness with fixed leg loops (a Camp Quartz predating the current CR3). Now I actually much prefer fixed leg loops: they are one less thing to adjust/check/worry about, they work great no matter how many layers I'm wearing, there are less buckles to scrape on the rock and less straps flying around, etc. Unless you know for sure that your need the adjustable legs to get a good fit, I would say get the Focus, or at least try it on to confirm it won't work great for you.
