Not a great option, in my experience. If you're gonna plan on a bivy, bring a lightweight sleeping bag. The weight difference is minimal for the time you spend in the bag and Needing sleep. The Elephants Foot (the model of halfbag l used) with a down jacket and a heavyweight (Bibler bigwall) bivy ain't very warm at all, top or bottom, and you don't get good sleep. My experience being in a hammock on the Diamond and bivying on the ground without success anywhere. There are some waaay light, super small stuffed size full size bags out there.
Depends on what else in your gear closet. I have one that is a single layer of primaloft (custom build). I specifically had it made for summer trips where I did not want to bring a light weight down bag and specifically wanted a synthetic bag. If i did not have a light weight down bag I would buy one of those first. As my down bag is only a couple pounds more.

This is the right answer. I got a Vireo with some overfill in the lower section. It's my go-to bag for just about everything now. I just wear more or less clothing inside the bag depending on the temperatures.
