NIAGRA FROZEN AGAIN!!! TIME TO CLIMB!?
|
So Niagra Falls is frozen AGAIN this year! Anyone hear of any parties planning to climb in during the 'open window'? Would def be a an amazing accomplishment to add to the tick list for serious ice climber. I'm not sure anyone has climbed it yet considering last time it froze (excluding earlier this year) was back in the early 1900's. Kind of an interesting thought. |

That would be epic. |

I guess it's not completely frozen, but portions are very climbable. Probably illegal though... a tick of a lifetime if you pull it off! |
|
They say they're not expecting it to thaw anytime soon. So there may be a rather large window. This article has some pretty good pics. Maybe someone can use them for beta. Climbing at night with all the cool lights would be pretty rad too!!! |

you would be breaking some laws and probably die |
|
When it froze the first time this year, it was during the Ouray Ice Fest. There was a small buzz about it, "is anyone gunna do it? That would be soooo cool!" But all the people (for the most part) who were capable of pulling it off were in Ouray! I thought that was funny. |

A couple decades ago, the American Falls were mostly blocked off for some construction, and the falls were climbed at that time. Illegal then, as now. No, it wasn't me; getting busted isn't the sort of excitement I crave. But I know who it was. |

Looks like a good way to die |

That looks a whole lot like the spray ice at Helmcken falls, so I don't think it would take screws, and yea, you'd probably die. Also, seems like there's some sure places you would not want to top out even if you didn't. |

My guess is the Mounties would shoot at any climber coming from the US side to get on the ice. Looks sweet, but doubt if it would be allowed. TOTALLY frozen solid one day would be a real sight. |

not sure how reliable this is, but a friend (not a climber) told me that over a month ago there were people climbing sections of it. she mentioned ice climbers with ropes. supposedly there were city-folk walking all around on the frozen ice as well. They just recently (several weeks ago) closed it off to everyone when they noticed cracks in the ice. |

The two Pennsylvania men, Walter Gladkowski, 48, and Gregory Payne, 46, were also charged with trespassing for climbing out on the Terrapin Point ice ledges. ;) |
