Good and CHEAP idea! I don't intend on going to Georgia and Kentucky any time soon :)

Awesome!!!

Civilian pepper spray really doesn't do anything. Especially to an animal. Personally id get a little .22 revolver and a CCP.

What's a CCP? A pistol is out of the question. I am not willing to to to those lengths in urban area. The only time I would consider carrying a weapon would be if we were in Alaska on a contract and I would be frequenting the wooded areas. In this case I would get a rifle and a permit to carry it of course. Mostly for protection against bears and other large animals. Which sounds pretty awesome if you ask me!

Concealed Carry Permit
Rifles don't need permits to carry.
You don't need a permit to carry any firearms in Alaska.
If you are carrying to protect yourself from bears in AK, you probably want a shotgun.

I'm a dog owner, love dogs, and feel that it's the owner's responsibility to protect their dogs by having good recall training. Confession, my dog's not perfect, especially when she sees other dogs to play with.

It's true that some breeds have a stronger prey drive than others, and are more inclined to chase. Training against a breed's nature is difficult, but really important.

I do not advocate this in the 1st world, but when traveling in the 3rd world and encountering a hostile dog, picking up a rock and threatening to throw it will often act as a deterrent.

Shotgun is too close range for a charging grizzly. You want a .45-70 lever action.

It kicks like a m'fer, however. Not pleasant for target shooting.

My plan is to face spray the dog with water from my bottle for now ...that is until I get the pepper spray you recommended. I do like the idea that it is so small and has a trigger for easy use. Sorry doggie guys. But blinding the dog temporarily is better than having to put it down.

I have a hard time with shooting guns that have a lot of kick. A revolver of smaller caliber is my choice. I would have to do some training in shooting a gun like that before we go to Alaska.

It is a very nice and clean looking rifle though!

I agree with Tom. Almost sounds like one incident ruffled your feathers and scared you pretty good and now you are on the war path looking for trouble.

The next dog that smells in your direction will probably get peppered in the face and I guarantee that the owner will be quite enraged. This will probably give you a smug, entitled, grin on your face and you will take the case to court and get a dog killed.

As Randy said, just stop if the dog is chasing you. If it continues to harass you, be like a human and beat it with your fists and feet. There is a reason dogs were domesticated by humans.

I will spray the dog with water first then use the pepper spray and continue on my way ...As the panicked owner of the dog will be attending to the dog's needs (I hope ) I make my escape from the situation. If I stop when the dog chases me it just gives the owner a chance to get some of the venum that will come from my mouth which will not only be a waste of my time and energy but also if the owner is a dick will give him a chance to be a dick to me....which I don't need. I will surely press charges if the dog puts a scratch on me or causes me to fall off the bike, damage my bike, etc. So that is my plan for now. And no I am not out there looking for trouble and spray happy. I know better than that.

Lemon juice in a tiny squirt gun will take care of dogs.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
