This North Face Poster is from late 60s or early 70s. It hung up in my family garage and since I was in diapers I remember it looked bad-ass but I've never known anything about the person, route or area? Look familiar to anyone?

North Face Poster from 70s

I gotta clear out books buried somewhere, but it seems to be a pic from the cover of a great mountaineering book from 70's,,,either Frost or Forrest I think is the person..I gotta go find it to be sure. Anybody else recognize this pic off of El Cap from the classic years?

Tom Frost?

Wonder if you're thinking of the cover shot of Tom Frost that's on the cover of Royal Robbins' Basic Rockcraft. That was my first thought when I saw the poster and took a look at the book...it isn't.

Could be the cover I'm thinking of,,,or a mountaineering instructional big wall book of same era. I own them all, but they've been stored away in plastic bins, buried deep in garage for over a decade. I gotta do a spring clean out for sure this year to find all my historic books I put away when the bookshelves just overflowed in each room of the house.

Frost FA of Salathe headwall. I think

Thought that too, but the clothes don't match. Took a quick look through a few other Yosemite golden era books I have and couldn't find a match.

This may bug me :).

Gaston Rebuffat perhaps? Or Bob Kamps? Kor?

I'm going with Patey ... don't ask me why....

Thanks for the ideas, good stuff...
Looking closely I notice the rolled up socks and rounded boot in front aider. It looks Euro to me but maybe that was just normal in early 60s. Rebuffat is interesting and I see resemblance. Patey I couldn't find many pics on internet to compare. Kor would roll up socks and his hair was trim early on. Is this climber lanky enough to be Kor?
Frost seems most likely, and I could see North Face choosing to use a California climber for this ad for their CA stores. But I think we ruled out Salathe Wall--different clothes and lighter rack from rockcraft photo.
Hope we can solve the mystery!

I've seen that picture BITD, and I don't think the mystery is solved. I don't think it is Frost and don't think it is El Cap.

Some things it definitely isn't: Not Euro or British, those guys all used ladder etriers BITD, Americans where the only ones using webbing. It isn't Kor, he was much bigger, and it isn't Kamps either.

I think the shot was taken on Lover's Leap. If anyone is familiar with the Leap, and if I'm right, they might recognize the locale; but of course by now the route has probably been done free.

How old is North Face brand? Do they go back further than the mid 70's?

Russ, The North Face website says founded in 1966 and by 1968 had 2 store locations. At the time this poster was made there were 4 stores total (SF, Berkeley, Palo Alto and I'm pretty sure 4th was Orinda but corner ripped off poster so can't be sure). Anyway I'd guess poster was made in 1969 or 1970 because 4 store count, although that's the date of poster, not date of picture used which could be older.

Thx for comments. I edited my initial post which confusingly referenced mid 70s as when my parents got poster--too much information! Anyway I blame this poster for why I'm a climber today, especially why I'm interested in aid. I was an impressionable youth.

might have an answer. we'll try to pull the archives we have which includes the '66 catalog, so maybe. good stumper.

snodale was thinking tompkins himself could be a good possibility.

The climber reminds me of some old photos I have seen of Royal Robbins.
But without being able to see the face is hard to tell.

Kamps,,that does sound like a possible from the book cover I'm picturing...But alas I won't be cleaning out that part of the garage book storage area for another month, so no definite detail until then when I find the books in question.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
