Figure I'd give the forum a shot. A buddy of mine gave me a pair of his grivel rambo crampons. What boots work well with these crampons? They are the older models. Any thoughts appreciated.

I'd say just about anything. The crampons are solid ice climbing beasts.

Traditionally, they'd be on a heavy stiff boot (like a Koflach), but I think they feel good on a light and modern boot like the Trango. They really stiffen up the footbed for a more solid climbing platform without sacrificing trail performance.

Make sure to rig some ABS plates, as these suckers ball like nothing else I've used.

I've got those MadRock climbing boots that they were selling off cheap about 5 years ago..they fit fine with my Rambos, and never come loose or pop off. Anti balling plastic is on the Rambos, so not a problem for my set.

Thanks guys, I tried fitting them to my invernos but the rocker left a gap in the heel.

I've had every generation of Rambo crampons except the 4s

They will work on any boot with a toe welt , and heel shelf .

If the bails don't quite fit snugly on the toe just mount them and form the toe bail with some persuasion from a hammer , don't worry it's not going to hurt the toe bail one bit
I've done this on just about every pair of crampons I own with not a single problem in 20 years.

Or you can try changing out the toe bail with another brand , I had to do this with a pair of petzl darts , I swapped out the petzl front bail with a pair of BD front bails to get the fit I wanted on a certain pair of boots, those "Bart's " have been going strong for 7 seasons now and I've never had any issues what so ever.

As for the heel issue check and make sure the frame is adjusted along with the heel bail , also check how the heal fits side to side might have to do a bit of tweeking to get your boots to set flat on the frame.

Depending on how much rubber is covering the toe of your boot, if it lacks a toe welt,,,,you can also 'melt' or carve out just the right amount of curve in the toe rubber to allow for the toe bail to make solid contact. I've done it also with wide heel boots, where the heel bail wire was made too narrow to come up past the back of the boot, so it got carved away to make room for the heel wire and lever. Don't ruin a thin made set of boots, it's gotta be a thick heavy mountain boot, or a double boot. I've not tried to carve or fix a solid plastic outer boot, just Vibram rubber soles in need of shaping.

I think anything will work but I think you're approach is backward unless you are at an ice park.

In my mind boots are the first thing to think about, then find crampons that fit those well. My reasoning is I am often hiking or skiing to my approach and the boot will be on my foot all day. Getting a good boot fit is the start not the finish.

Can you give us pictures of the 'poon fitted to the boot?

got 'em fitted now!! a little jostlin' around but I got them to sit flat! I just didn't want to be too rough with them, since I can be a bit of a bull and tend to break things.

I've worn mine with Lowa Civetta double plastic boots for years. Also work well with a pair of leather Scarpa Manta mountain boots I have.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
