Gear Discount resources

I'm hoping that since this is gear related, this is the right area to start a thread like this but if not please let me know or move it.

I've been on quite a mission lately to fill out my gear closet with some new gear for ice climbing and have noticed that the cost really does add up. To that end I've tried to buy gently used gear whenever I can but have also spent a fair bit on new gear from normal shops. My question is how 'creative' are the rest of you in getting a good deal and what other methods do you use to squeeze the last dime out of the price?

An example - I picked up 3 NEW Grivel 360 screws from theclymb the other day for $32 each and a NEW BD Turbo Express from EMS for $36. That's close to the prices that used ones sell for on here. I know I sound like a TV salesman but considering how much I've saved I thought I'd at least spell it out for others to use or leave.

The two big savings are 'click-through' cashback and discount giftcards. Full-disclosure, if you signup through them I do benefit so if you don't want to share the love - just type the website name without the referral section:

Click-through:
mrrebates.com?refid=634786
activejunky.com/invite/5091…

Giftcards:
raise.com/raise-rewards/MDo…

Anyway the additional 38% I saved over the sale price at theclymb and the additional 25% I saved at EMS were because of stacking the coupon code, click-through and discount giftcard steps. Click-through cashback ranges up to 14% at places like Backcountry and you can regularly find discount giftcards to REI & EMS for 15-18% off. It's allowed me to stretch my money further and afford some nice new gear to play outside with.

Hope this helps someone and if anyone's got any other tips, feel free to share in the replies or PM.

Thank you for sharing... I will definitely be checking the discounted gift cards.

Pro deals are another option. Promotive and Outdoor Prolink are the two that come to mind. Check those two out and see if you qualify.
Climbing wise promotive.com has Trango... And PLENTY of other gear brands

Outdoor Prolink has many non climbing deals. As far as climbing they have omega pacific, camp USA, trango, and dmm to name a few.

With pro deals you aren't allowed to share prices or purchase for other people

Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought about that.
Also, just a heads up if anyone is looking to try out the gift certificate route through Raise, they're giving an additional 5% off today only with code 'HAPPY1YEAR'. For somewhere like EMS that brings the total potential savings to about 23% off the purchase price and you can use it on anything - no clearance exclusions like normal in-store coupons.

Just a head's up if anyone's looking for ice climbing gear, EMS currently has everything 20% off. An example of a BD Cobra retail $335.95 can be had for $209.09! That's cheaper than the ones I got used. The method is detailed in this thread but essentially it's EMS discount: $335.95 - 20% = $268.76
Raise Gift Card:$270 - 14.6% = $230.60
Activejunky click through is 8% of $268.76 = $21.50
Free shipping for over $50 purchase and for those without an EMS in their state there's no sales tax. Same logic works on ANYTHING that's currently on sale from screws to Spantiks (which would be $453.97!). Hope this helps someone - it's already added to my rack :)

Just don't forget the Giftcard or at least the click-thru and it'll be even cheaper - best you could do is $168 without tax. Happy climbing

Thanks. Do you have any personal experience with their Insulight jackets? Maybe compared to the Atom LT or Rime Pro? I'd also snap up a pair of their Guide Pants if they just made them in a longer inseam.

Also check out Steep and Cheap and The Clymb - both sites offer items for a limited time and also limited in quantity, color, size, and selection but at a very good discount (anywhere from 40-90% off)

Another tip:
A guy I know built an entire rack+, for super cheap by spending time on the phone talking to sales reps. He got pro deal prices for being active military.

Good for him Robbie. And he SHOULD! We owe our vets plenty - and then some IMHO!

So NYClimber, did you end up getting a Nomic? Out of curiosity, what was your out the door cost on that?

This is great, these discounts really add up when they're on top of sales.

Yeah AHP. It appears that their 20% OFF Ice Gear Sale has now ended.

As my favorite climbing bog says,

"Modern ice climbing gear can be the most expensive climbing gear out there. Over the years, i have figured out a great way to save money. Don’t ice climb."
