Hello NMers,

I am planning to head down to Las Cruces for the long weekend to escape the CO wintery weather. Temps look good, but I'm not sure about snow/ice on more northerly-facing routes. I was thinking of climbing a few routes on Sugarloaf and maybe doing some TBD sort of hike/scrambling thing. Does anyone have any updates?

thanks,
Michelle

We have not had very much precipitation this winter. We just got some snow a couple days ago in the higher elevations but a friend just said there is little to no snow in the organs as of now. And its been in the mid 50s there during the day. So you should be ok but there could still be a little ice or snow in more shaded areas I would assume. Regardless you could find something to climb there for sure sugarloaf looks clear from rt 70....
Also the "rough and readys" past cruces and "the tunnel" Which is 45 minutes from the organs are both good to climb right now.

sorry for the thread hijack but Taylor, do you think anything up around Santa Fe will be climeable in the next week or two? still too cold up there??

Diablo Canyon was beautiful yesterday.

No ice and snow problems anymore. Few patches in much shaded places, of no consequence. But Sugarloaf can be windy if the wind comes from the West. Quite windy. Two to three times the wind speeds in town. Keep that in mind and have a good time.

I second marta on the wind factor on sugarloaf, and as for santa fe climbing I don't know that's pretty far north of here I couldn't really say sorry....

Sorry to perpetuate the thread hijack but since Fosanna got the information she needed, I think the drift is alright now. Northern NM is bone dry this winter so the climbing is great right now. Sunny and pleasant. Not much fun in the shade but doable. Diablo, White Rock, Taos Gorge even the south-facing walls in the Jemez at Las Conchas and Upper East Fork.
