So we were up climbing on the mesa yesterday and were approached by a ranger on the trail. He was with Jefferson County open space and was there to inform us that the mesa has been gifted to open space by the Access Fund. He said it is part of Access Funds strategy to use their funds to acquire new land and protect more endangered areas. He assured us that the only two changes they were planning on making were: 1) All dogs must be on leash at all times and 2) they are planning on leveling out some of the belay areas and getting rid of rocks to make the belay areas "safer".
It all sounded reasonable and I guess was nice to hear that this great climbing area is not in danger at all of being sold to private land owners and has long term plans to remain a climbing area.
The Access Fund is still the current owner of Golden Cliffs, and is actively working to clean up the property title before transferring the 29 acres to the County sometime this spring.
In 2013, the Access Fund began investigating the possibility of transferring Golden Cliffs to Jefferson County Open Space, which has a long history of collaborative, climbing-friendly management of dozens of other crags along the Colorado Front Range.
Climbers should be assured that climbing access at Golden Cliffs will not be affected by this transfer. The Access Fund has guaranteed that climbing access will not be affected unless a natural disaster or wildlife protection issues temporarily restrict public access.
Stay tuned for an announcement of the transfer to the County, as well as an upcoming celebration at Golden Cliffs to commemorate the legacy of Mayford Peery, who donated the cliffs to the Access Fund in 1994. The event will celebrate 20 years of Access Fund ownership and officially present Golden Cliffs to Jefferson County Open Space.
