This could also apply to any of the repetitive threads about a PAS, or the EDK, or what quickdraw or which carabiner, ad infinitum.

We have a search function, but people want to ask the same questions.

While increased membership on MP is potentially a good thing for the database, it has also led to an increase in trolling and off-topic blabbering. There are plenty of ways to improve the current problem(s). Some solutions may include:

  • Creating an "Articles" section in which posts are approved to go live, and the authors are responsible for keeping them updated (heavy moderation in this section).
  • A way to downvote forum topics (a la reddit)
  • A way to downvote individual replies to topics (enough downvotes hides the reply)
  • A two-step process for posting in the forums (e.g. a step that asks "does this contribute?" or "does this really need to go here?" or "we have a Community forum for off-topic banter; consider posting there" or "here is our search tool; have you searched for similar topics yet?")
  • A way for admins to merge a newly-posted topic with an existing one
  • A killfile (i.e. a way to put individual MP members on an "ignore" list, so that we don't have to wade through their crap every time we read a topic)
  • Forum subcategories that are specific to commonly-reposted topics (e.g. rope soloing)

None of these involves restricting freedom of speech or expression, but would still clean things up a bit. MP forums are beginning to parallel RockClimbing.com's.

Unfortunately, all of these things are a lot of work and the people working on this site (for who I am extremely grateful) are likely too busy to even read this post.

If only MP were opensource...I'd be willing to contribute to such a project.

Maybe some day...

If the two of us keep commenting on this post, it's going to turn into the next COME SEE OUR ICE SILO thread.

...I'm in.

Marsella says: Such a section could have a tree-style info hierarchy and NOT BE OPEN TO REPLIES. It could be a DEPOT FOR INFORMATION (rather than a discussion)! It could contain "articles" written by MP'ers about tech tips for stuff such as rope soloing, aiding, shoe-stuff, etc etc. MP could perhaps enlist some of the more experienced climbers in the community to moderate (by which I mean, reading the posts and determining the basic safety / verifying the concept of the article / general readability)...

+1. sounds like itd also be fun to put together. such a database would be rad.

Only hot chicks can kill lycans, and only chicks that use a pas are hot, so there proven. Chicks with PP are just not black leather hot lycan killers....

That's the point of "making a statement"...

There are much better threads about foods out there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
