What areas at the north side are currently closed? The closure report was a little confusing. We were planning to get on the sperm and the womb and maybe some other stuff.
Cheers,
Will

everything to climber's right but not including glass menagerie for all intensive purposes...you're good to go. Have fun

Slow saturday up in VA??

indeed...i always manage to screw up idioms. Living in this country for 20+ years and i still say "hit the nail with the hammer" instead of "hit the nail on the head".

I'm saying that the closure affects routes to climbers right of Glass Menagerie but not including glass menagerie. The boulder field is thought to be off under the aerie too but chances of that being confirmed/regulated probably slim. So anything uphill from GM all the way to hidden wall and beyond is good

The forest service road ended up being closed right past johns rock. We just headed on down to Cedar. Any easy access up there if the gate is closed?

Just to clarify the gate to 475B the gravel road was closed??

You can hike in to the north side from sliding rock but i've never done that.

I've also never seen the cathy's creek closed because people live off that road BUT check the forest service site for current road closure. Also i dont see 475 as being closed at the moment.

If your going to cedar then dont continue on 475 but go back through town and approach from cathy's creek

Yeah, surprisingly 475 was closed, the gravel road heading to all of the parking. They had a sign up that said something about it being closed due to "soft ground."
I bet the hike from Sliding Rock takes quite a while.

475b is closed from the intersection with 475 up to the Nose area parking lot. You can access the Nose area and the North side of Looking Glass by entering 475b further north on highway 276.

I had assumed that side would be closed as well. Thanks.

ya they do that so the road doesn't get tore up by redneckery and traffic but they usually post up online about it. Trav's got a good point. You could always climb at John's rock.

Or just hike and make it an alpine type day

I've been interested in doing some stuff at johns rock, anything worthwhile aside from rattlesnake crack? Thanks for the info everyone.

Up-to-date info (as of Friday afternoon) from a friend who spoke with the ranger: The other end of 475b is open. It's gated between the nose area parking to the fish hatchery end. Very easy to drive to the NF this way.

This was a compromise between the CCC and the FS to reduce thru-traffic and thus wear/tear, but to still allow access to LG. You can fairly easily hike to the southside from the nose area if you use the sun wall shortcut (the distance would be about the same).

Just heard that the Forest Service has closed 475B from both ends now. The snow and rain have made the road challenging for them to maintain. They'll reopen it as soon as conditions allow. Looks like you can get in a little solitude at Looking Glass if you're wiling to make the hike!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
