I am looking for ways to improve my boyfriend's diet. I eat pretty much everything while he is very picky. We both could benefit from better nutrition and fuel for long days outdoors. I would like to hear from nutrition gurus out there.

I typically just eat bananas and apples for lunches while climbing. They are not exciting, but they help ensure I remain skinny. Granola bars are another options, if you choose healthy ones without sugar.

KN , Ryan is REALLY picky. Being skinny is not an issue actually. I was looking into nutrients and high energy foods, preferably non processed. I am not opposed to mix my own granolla. Ryan lived on sneaker's bars and kit kats last summer!

Try weaning him off the chocolate with a strict diet of ginger-bread, ginger-ale, and ginger-snaps.

I really like nuts, they are good, I like salty nuts, sweet nuts, plain nuts, big nuts and small nuts. You can never lose if you choose nuts.

I have a personal obsession with grapefruit. I eat one a day minumum. They actually have a fair amount of vitamins and nutrients, but are in no way calorie dense.

On the calorie rich tip, I love pistacios, nut butters (especially homemade fancy ones) and dips and spreads I make myself out of legumes like chickpeas or white beans. Add some roasted garlic, EVOO, whatever chopped herbs I have left over from other meals and maybe an extra kick of tahini and I wouldn't even miss the meat from a sandwich with that on it. Plus, they keep for at least a couple of days.

I also add sprouts to every sandwich because they provide a great contrasting texture along with the good nutrition stuff.

Man, those Vega shakes give me some of the worst abdominal pain. I think its the way the plant matter is extracted etc. Do some research about plant proteins and the human body. I'm not convinced "every human" can process these compounds. What is in those shakes is a protein isolate that is chemically extracted, and not exactly something you would find in nature. I think they are kinda f--king w. you marketing this "vegan" chemistry experiment. Vegan does not equal healthy in all circumstances.

I eat a lot of pot chocolate while out climbing. High calories, high mindstate, maybe a little anti inflamitory. And PB, Nutella, and Bacon sammys.

Everyone is like... oh you shouldn't eat so much bacon... I say wtf not? So good. That pig gave his LIFE for that nitrate infused cured meat. Thanks pig!

If you read past the first five words she wrote, you'll see there was a lot more good advice there.

The Vega shakes recently tested positive for antibiotics.... So after that I stopped using them. Plus their berry flavor (IMO) tastes like someone ate berries and puked them up. I tend to use USANA (also expensive) and my boyfriend dislikes them, but they recently made healthy fudge brownie protein bars (like cliff bars) which are universally loved (again expensive).

Cliff bars are good too, they are fairly unprocessed.

Larabars are even less processed and you can make your own for fairly cheap (mix equal parts nuts, dates, and your choice of dried fruit, put in a food processor until sticky and well-mixed, put in the freezer to set-- My favorite combo is lemon blueberry, use a splash of lemon juice and zest from a lemon and dried blueberries, everyone loves these).

I always bring a can of tuna in extra virgin olive oil. The olive oil gives it really good flavor. Blue corn chips go along for the ride frequently. I also will take a bar of 85% cacao and eat it with raw almonds, or dip it in some extra virgin coconut oil (tastes like almond joy). Apples are a frequent flyer in my pack as well.

Generally on long days outdoors, especially up in the mountains, I eat candy, snickers bars, sweedish fish, etc. Combined with Pringles, beef jerky, pop-tarts, occasional granola bars, and occasionally granola with freeze-dried fruit in it.

Honestly for long days outside or long days with intense exercise "health food" becomes somewhat irrelevant. I generally look for whatever has the most calories / weight and tastes good. It can be nearly impossible to consume enough calories on long, intense climbing days. Most nutrition information out there is geared toward people with low caloric burn. On days where you are burning 6000+ calories from climbing and hiking all day the average nutrition information just does not apply.

This is probably relevant: fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/htmlpubs…

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
