mecca, worth the trip?

I've been to Mecca a few years ago. I spent the last day of a trip at the platue boulders. A year later I returned with friends on the way to Joes Valley. We spent a day trying to navigate through all the choss to find climbable rock. My friends grew impatient so we moved on after an afternoon of searching. I'll be back in the vegas area at some point this winter and was hoping to make a return visit. So, is it worth the trip? Is there any new beta out there for the area? Any info would be helpful. Opinions from people that have spent some time there would be much appreciated also.
Thanks

Hey Justin, Besides the obvious areas around Red Rocks, what would you recommend? I guess you've been out to Mecca? I'd like to go to an area thats not over run with pad people, there's enough of that here on the East Coast. A local I met at the Monkey bars boulders, years ago, had told me that mecca was had tons of boulders that were steep roofs just like the monkey bar boulders, thats what inspired that first trip there so many years ago. I probably will stop there, even if its just on the way somewhere else, what area would you recommend checking out?

I think Justin may have mistaken your inquiry about "Mecca" for the trad-climbing destination Moderate Mecca in Calico Basin.

The bouldering at Windy Canyon is excellent and sees very little traffic. The road is a little rough but most sedans can make it.

Keyhole Canyon has a smallish collection of good problems and also sees almost no boulderers.

The stuff past Monkey Bars in Gateway is usually empty as well.

Genius,
Less developed is exactly what I'd like, as long as there are some gems to be found. So, I have an old guide for the area. What areas produce the best concentration of quality boulders? Like I've said, I've been to the platue area, I'd like to see some of the other spots that made people think it was gonna be the next hueco. I really do appreciate the feedback from everyone. And, I do love exploring, but, when on a trip with limited time, it's nice to know I'm not just searching in vein.

The best concentration of the most solid rock and steep lines is the Century Boulders. It is quite a bit past the Plateau. You will go through a rough bit of road and there will be a decent dirt road on the right that heads slightly down hill. It ends at a nice parking area. Take a trail/wash on the left. Keep trending left and up. You should find The Century Boulder which is about 25 feet tall with some tall lines and also some steep hueco climbing in the bottom center of it. Many more awesome boulders are further left of it. It is easy to get a little lost wondering around there. The rock still has some choss, but the developed lines (that have not been climbed much in years...I presume) were pretty good. The rock is very rough on the skin.

hey dnoB, Whattya think.... if you only had a few days in the are would you head to mecca? Red rocks is always great but being that it's so in the media this season if figure it's pretty crowded. I do like the idea of exploring an area...but I've got some people meeting me that may not be as hot on the idea. Phuk it... I'm going and I"m taking some photos so that the database can finnally be updated....unless anyone opposes that idea.

Mecca is good, but you can always find solitude in Red Rocks. Do you have the big bouldering guide? There are lots of isolated ares.

I don't think putting Mecca in MP is a problem. It will never be overrun.

The guides I have are all older ones. My friend out there, I believe, has the newest guide to bouldering in southern nevada. For the most part, the ones that I have pretty much cover kraft area. And areas that have probably been demolished in the name of progress/urban spraw. I guess I'll have to figure it out as I go, thats usually how things pan out anyway.
I just can't get mecca outta my mind. Ever since I went there the first time and just looked around... I couldn't believe the wealth of boulders there. It's a cruel joke of the universe that they are for the most part choss. But I will definitely be making at least a day stop there.
Thanks again.

You should look into the Jean boulders aka Prison Gate. Also NO I'm not confused between Mecca and Moderate Mecca in Calico. I'm not a fan of the rock out there (Mecca). It's worth a trip to see it once but to me there are better places.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
