Access Issue: Seasonal raptor closing on Ballfield Slabs.
Details
Per CT-DEEP, the Ballfield Slabs close May - August due to active raptor nesting in the area.
Description
This gigantic cliff is simply stunning standing at the base. It's easy to see how this 300ft tall cliff is the largest in the state... AND THE MOST DANGEROUS. This area was created from extensive quarrying operations. As a result the base is covered in shrapnel from massive blocks disloging and exploding at the base. It is NOT recommended that anyone belay at the base of any of these cliffs. Even lowering down can cause problems with the rope dislodging flakes and blocks that could injure, cut ropes, and kill.
Getting There
From Merritt Parkway take exit 59 and travel north on Whalley Ave (rt 69). Take a right onto Bradley Rd, at T intersection turn left continuing on Bradley Rd. Follow to end and park. Scramble up talus field up and left towards the base of the quarry. There is also the main entrance on Wintergreen Ave which will allow you to drive north on Baldwin Ave to reach the top of the quarry.
