Hey guys, so here's the story. I bought a Sterling Evolution Velocity 9.8mm rope about 9 months ago. It was 80 meters but I chopped it in half because all of the sport climbing in my area is mostly below 40 feet tall. After using one of the 40 meter ends for quite some time and taking at least 150 whippers on it, the only wear it has is the rope feels thin after using it a few times. My question is, when should I retire the rope? I can't see the core and I know it's not shot. I just have heard from many people that they have ropes that they have used for years and years but I am worried about what I should do, in case I need to make a rope purchase here in the near future.

I wouldn't stress it too much. I have had that same rope for months (60M) and chopped it in half for the gym. I prob take 20 whippers a night 2 times a week on it not including my partners falls, and she's still good to go.

What I would pay attention to is giving your rope some time to "recover" after a fall. repeated falls in a short time on the same section of rope WILL wear your rope MUCH faster than normal wear n tear. Also, switch the ends you are leading on between pitches.

Chop the end and climb on.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
