REI Climbing Sales?

Nothing stops you from going in, grabbing one cam, going to the register, and telling them you haven't used your 20% coupon yet. You don't actually need to have the coupon on you.

Then come back the next day, get another cam, same deal.

There's no record of who has used the coupon and you don't need it physically. Dishonest? That's your own call.

My guess is they track that you used your 20% under your member ID. But hey, someone on this forum HAS to work at REI right? Maybe they can tell us. :-)

Actually, you can order online - free store pickup or shipping if expensive enough - and re-use the 20% discount for each order.
This shouldn't be new news for anyone who's done that before, though.

And again, unless you have a gift card - much better deals can be had online, with free shipping and no sales tax, when other sites have sales.

ive purchased multiple things online with the %20 off coupon. if you order each thing individually you can use the promo code as many times as you want. never tried this in store.

Anyone have info on when the 20% coupon is coming out? Gift card is burning a hole in my pocket. Thanks.

It's threads like this where people publicly recommend how to take advantage of REI that lead to more restrictions within the companies policies. To answer your question, dividends and 20% off coupons generally come out in mid to late march.

Monty, few on this thread are talking about taking advantage. He just wants to use his gift card when stuff is on sale. I'll be doing the same and coupling my dividend (usually $4-$6) with it.

Is waiting until pineapple goes on sale taking advantage of King Soopers?

No, but when there is a limit of 3 pineapples/person and you buy 3 and then go right back in the store and buy 3 more, I would say that is being dishonest and taking advantage of King Soopers.

I understand how people can reason that it is not dishonest but using a 20% off coupon multiple times when it is only supposed to be used once- is dishonest in my book, and that was exactly what was mentioned previously. But hey, next time you try to buy something when you don't have a coupon and the MSRP is 10% higher than it used to be, you need not ask why.

That isn't what the OP is about. He just wanted to know when there was a sale so he could get the most out of a gift certificate. No need for a high horse here.

Alright so I work for REI and I'm going to go ahead and provide some clarification to this matter....

1. REI does not have a 30 day price guarantee... it's only 2 weeks. If the item goes on sale within 14 days of you purchasing it, in the store or on the website, we will give you the difference back. This does not apply toward outlet items. If it's an outlet item (the price will end in .73), there are no price adjustments.

2. All members get 20% coupons several times a year... regardless of how much or little you use your membership. We USUALLY send one out with the dividends (mid-march) but this has not been confirmed yet. You do not have to have the coupon with you to use it but they are tracked. I can see in your purchase history if you have already used the coupon. Also, we are switching over to a new system that processes online orders. This new system is supposed to automatically detect whether or not you've used the 20% off already.

3. Sometimes we do other promotions that are designed to reward people who spend a lot of money or encourage those who haven't been in for a long time to come back in. These aren't 20% coupons, they are usually 15% off an REI or Novara brand item. You will have to have this coupon with you in order to use it.

4. Our biggest sale of the year is the anniversary sale which happens every May.. We almost always issue a 20% coupon for this sale as well. Regardless, this is when you'll find the best prices.

5. We do not get bonuses for selling memberships. Not even a little one.

6. We do destroy climbing gear with the exception of shoes. I've found BRAND NEW climbing shoes at scratch and dent before and for way cheaper than even pro-deal prices. Certainly worth looking into.

7. You will get 10% dividends on all FULL PRICE purchases. If you want dividends back on everything, look into getting the REI visa. You usually get a $100 gift card for signing up and then you get an additional 5% back on everything. So, you get 15% back on full price items, 5% back on sale items, and 1% back on all non-REI purchases. I have it, the APR is kinda high. But, if you spend a lot of money there it's worth it. I only use it at REI and everything I buy is on sale. Just with the extra 5% my dividend is always at least a couple hundred dollars. If you want to do this, send me a message first. I can give you my employee number to enter as a reference and then I'll get a small bonus. In return, I can send you a friends and family coupon when they come out later this year (you'll get 20% off your entire purchase- even sale items!!!)

8. I'm not going to get into abusing the return policy too much but I will say... you will have a harder time abusing the return policy now. Its certainly still doable... but if the cashier is doing their job it will be a lot harder for you to consistently get away with it. I deny returns to customers who are regularly abusing the policy.

9. Waiting for things to go on sale is not scamming the system. I do it all the time.

10. Winter clearance is happening next week. Good deals on winter stuff and I know a pack of biners that I've been eyeing will be 50% off....

:) HAVE A GOOD DAY EVERYONE!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
