Attention climbers…

Winter is fast approaching and the ice is forming even faster so that can only mean one thing, time to get the ice tools ready for another great season of climbing at The Ice Pit. This year Midwest Ice Climbers Inc. is proud to present our 2nd annual Ice Fest. The dates for the festival are January 15th and 16th 2011. Gear demos and reps will be onsite to assist you with all your climbing desires. Climbing starts at 9am both days and the cost is a minimal $10.00 per day. All ropes and routes are set all you need to do is show up with a helmet and a harness (and the required forms). Saturday night there will be a climbing social and slide show at the Ramada Inn. Presenters are being booked and once confirmed I will post that information. Sponsors so far include Black Diamond, Scarpa, Sterling and Petzl. Be sure to stay tuned for more information. You can also stay informed by checking out our website theicepit.org and by following us on Facebook.

Is this a good opportunity if you've never ice climbed before to learn? I'm actually going up to Ice Fest in the U.P. in February to take the intro class, but still wouldn't mind checking this out since I'm from Green Bay. I have my own own harness and helmet as well.

Arik,

We do not have any lessons, however, last year we had plenty of non-climbers stop by just to see the event. If you have climbing experience then I would say it is still possible to pair up with an experienced climber once you are there and get some ice time. I would certainly recommend coming and hanging out and then going to the Ramada Inn for the slide shows. You can't go wrong for $10 and then if you have enough fun you can come by on sunday too. Be sure also to follow us on Facebook (The Ice Pit) and then after you go to Munising you can look into joining the club since you are right here in GB! Thanks for your interest and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Will it be possible to get ice time, even if not signed up for the clinics? Also, where is the signup for clinics? Is it on the IcePit.com site?

Dave,

Thanks for you interest! Yes you would be able to climb. I would say at this point there will be no problem having 20+ ropes out. You may have to spend a little time waiting to get on a route though but shouldn't be too much. Also if you are interested in the clinics the sign up is done through our web page, theicepit.org.

Hope this helps! See you on the ice!

At last! The presenters have been confirmed and (insert drumroll sound) here they are...

John Hansen of Wautoma will be presenting on his guiding experiences including his summit of Mt Everest. His show will include video and pictures of the climbs, countries and culture that he has experienced.

Eric Landmann of Madison and "Climbing Central" will present on the history of ice in the Midwest, from the early days at Orient Bay, Paradice, Starved Rock, Wyalusing and Dodge.

And...

There will also be an informal roundtable session with James Loveridge with a "Q & A Beta Session on the Frozen Choss and Modern Classics of the North Shore" this will be an informal gathering around a table for those interested.

Don't forget there will also be hot food and beverages for sale onsite both days to help keep you going!

Lastly there will be a GEAR SWAP for those looking to score some or liquidate what they don't need. Finally, don't forget that there will be gear for sale from Downwind Sports and O2 Gear Store.

Be there!

Hope you are coming up next weekend for our fest!

Don't forget to come out to the Ramada Inn for the "after party". The social will begin around 6pm with the slideshows/presentations starting at 630 pm.

Come climb all day, try out some new gear and then hang out and watch some great presentations!

See ya there...

Does anybody know if the Icepit (outside Green Bay, WI) is extant? All urls purportedly associated with it are now 'up for sale.'

As far as I know it was closed a few years back. I think the quarry was sold to new owners and the ice pit was not able to renegotiate the climbing contract. I'm not certain, but there are probably some old ice pit members floating around the message boards that can confirm or deny my statement.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
