I'm visiting family in Gilbert, AZ until Jan. 11 and want to take some of my family (beginners) out toproping. Are there any spots that are within an hours drive that you guys would recommend? I have a trad rack for anchors with plenty of cord as well. This is my first time in the area so your suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi Daniel,
Scottsdale has some great and easy close-in top roping. Pinnacle Peak Park has several top rope crags, e.g., Cactus Flower. The McDowells also feature close-in top rope areas, including Sven Slab, Sven Towers, Fort McDowell, Half and Half, to name just a few.
PM me with an email address if you want some updated route photos of these granite crags. All have moderate lines and easy to set up anchors.

There is a little in Queen Creek Canyon. Snorkeling in the Rhyolite in the Mine Area is a fun 5.5 that you can TR, has a bolted anchor and is great for beginners. The Mine Area has a few more TR routes.

If you have some draws and a belayer, Queen Creek Canyon has numerous easy-moderate routes. Let me know when you would be going and I might be able to help out.

Queen Creek Canyon is about a 45min drive from Gilbert.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
