+1 for the Deuter Guide 35. Sounds like it'll nicely tick all your boxes.

I have one that will probably get a few snide remarks. First off, i have to start by saying i own about every bag there is. I don't know what it is but i have a secrete romance for packs. i have Black diamond, REI, Swiss, many forms of Camel Pack, even a Tumi, and probably any other bag on the market. As i started Solo Climbing, i was looking for a good pack that could hike with a few days in the bush, i could keep more then just climbing gear if i needed to, or if i was just climbing was light and comfortable, easy but good straps, and pretty much fit all the requirements you labeled. Additionally, i wanted a bag that had a good open round top so it can double as a rope bag as i have to hang my rope from the mountain as i climb multiple pitch, and wanted a smooth pull as i use a solo devise. Well, would you believe, it turned out to be the good old ALICE pack. Yea yea, i know. You can get it for like $100 bucks new with a frame, and it fits all the requirements. or used army navy for like $50.00 I actually pulled mine out from my basement from when i was in the Marine corps. I have had it since 1999, and to this day it is still out performing. I thought to try it because of the easy access wide open top. Everything about this Bag i have always loved. Once again, it rides upon my back, and all the rest have made there way to the basement.

Climbing with a ruck sucks.

Rucks

How much does that ^dinosaur weigh empty?! Holy hell! Why not use a stubby haul bag? :D

I figured i'd get one or 2 nay sayers. Medium Pack alone is 2pounds 8 ounces. Light weight aluminum frame comes in at (LC-1) is another 3 pounds 8 ounces, totaling 6 pounds empty. A Osprey Variant same size is 3 pounds 10 Ounces, a DEUTER Freerider Pro 30 Backpack has half the cubic storage and weighs in at 3 pounds 15 ounces. Camel Pack Pit Boss also has half the capacity and comes in just under 4 pounds. These are top rated climbing packs. that i have purchased and put through the ringer, and i don't find them as convenient, as easily accessible, and as strong as my Ruck. Also using as a wide open mouth rope bag, while maintaining all my gear was not capable by any of these other packs other than the Ruck. To boot, these other packs do not handle weight as well, and if you take a extended trip with More gear, (or carry more gear to reduce the load on your loved one, I do not find it as comfortable as the Ruck, which easily carries 70 pounds without breaking a sweat. Also i noticed if i have to haul the ruck up the face of a climb, it is far more durable and does not damage. The other bags i had to have repaired after a day of climbing and hauling, or get another haul bag to put it in to make it safe for pulling up. I think for the extra 2 pounds empty, i will stick with the Ruck. I will still probably keep buying others and trying them out, as i said before, i have a romance for packs. If anyone has a opinion on the absolute best bag for very rough abuse, comfortable even when maxed on weight, and easy access that can double as a top bag while full, let me know. Im always up for trying new ones.

Both my khamsin and my hmg are sub 3 lbs, the kahmsin even less without the waist belt and frame. And how far is that 70lbs going? How comfortable is that blob of material. Not mention how slim "modern" climbing packs are. He's basically looking for a keen-on-features crag pack, not a 6 lb bomb case. Which he got, in a nozone

And with that I mean all due respect. I'm just a light is right kind of guy atm. ;)

I don't think I'd call what I'm looking for a "crag-pack" but maybe we're splitting hairs.

I'm getting ahead of myself. This is why I generally lurk and don't post. You were not looking at a crag pack, but a technically advanced climbing pack. Alpine is much different than cragging. And the hair splits... And the deceased equine beast continues to be deceased ;) how's the pack working out?

the added requirement of taking more gear on longer trips in your original inquiry is what brought me to the Ruck. if you just want a day pack anything will do. I have a day pack for each activity so i can just pick up and go , skiing, scuba, hiking, and so on. But long rough climbing trips that lots of gear is carried, Ruck all the way. And it doesn't have to be a "blob" of extra gear. If you have a hour or more hike with a 40 degree invert to get to the crag, you probably don't want your rack on your hips, i tend to tote mine in my bag. With rope, that adds up. All in all it won't matter what any one suggests, your going to have to try them out for yourself. Its why i have so many bags, i didn't like what others suggested, and they became day bags. Everyone is different. Trial and error works best. REI is great cause you can get fitted and rent bags for a day so you don't have to dump the loot. go try a few and see what works best for you. then you can come back and also tell me how my ruck sucks :)

^^ By the looks of that helmet, I'd say he's gotta be throwing down some serious big air mctwists. That or flying jets.

Boy from my ruck to the Helmet, i feel the Love. Actually, for winter climbing i switch to my Ski helmet. I don't have to put anything under it so it is very comfortable and very warm. Not sure how many of you climb in 18 degree weather on the shady side of Tamanny, but it gets cold, and the half domes for summer just don't cut it. Im not on the Mountain to impress anyone but myself by pushing the limits of my last climb. I go with whats comfortable and works for me. Plus its in the car so if i want to go skiing i have everything i need to ski if the mountain is not climbable due to weather.

Jonah, where did you get your ruck sack?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
