I like it, but am I the only one who thinks the slide show pictures change a bit quick???

I dislike the interactive map on the front page. To me this feature is style-over-substance and something I will only use when traveling to a new area. I mostly visit the site for local route beta and news.

I miss the arrows for scrolling through the photo of the moment. I'm usually looking on my phone and those little squares are way too small.

not about the home page but for elsewhere on mp, i think it would be awesome if you could scroll though photos using your arrow keys, and not click next photo every time

I really appreciate the change to the Photo of the Moment feature--no more cropping of vertically formatted images! Thank you!!

John Marsella wrote:Hey Andy et al, Since the implementation of the international ratings setup, the photos on the front page, when they are of a route with a rating, are captioned as such: Route Name ( where it would have previously said Route Name (5.x) ; In addition, onMouseOver, you get something like this: This occurs both in FF and Safari.
Thanks John, got that fixed.

re: the new layout, the buttons for viewing page listings for photos (or any other list) for 'next' and 'last' are too close to each other. Its super easy to hit 'last' and I'm doing it way too often. Maybe put 'next' on the left of the #'s?

Long time lurker here. I came back and saw the new layout, not stoked. But, such is life, change is inevitable. So I had to sign up to ask a question thats most likely been asked/answered on this TR (couldn't find it). Where do I find the recent comments? And can I narrow down which areas I want to see comments from? Thanks for any helpful response.

tenesmus and John Marsella: I agree and increased both the font size and spacing around those links. It will takea while for all instances of them to flush out of our caching system, but here's an example of the new version: nick.mountainproject.com/sc…

BigNobody: Recent Comments can be found below the Featured Route (middle of the page below the New Forum Posts). Both the Featured Route and all those "New" links can be restricted to your Favorite Areas. There is a link to select them in that same general area of the page (look for the "Change" link).

After weeks of using the new layout, I have the following complaints:

The homepage slideshow photos, especially the vertically oriented photos, are too small. After zooming in to make those bigger, many end up poorly cropped.

I don't click on a photo until after seeing all of a given set of eight, because I haven't found a way to get back to that set. Perhaps that shouldn't be a problem -- photos are repeated over and over again -- so I may be able to again see what I miss when I click on another photo.

Speaking of repeated photos: A different algorithm should be used for selecting slideshow photos. Most slideshow photos are repeated ad infinitum. I've seen some hundreds of times. I suspect that the contributors of those photos are merely stuffing the ballot box. The database contains thousands of suitable photos that have rarely or never been seen in the slideshow. Pics should serve two purposes: to be entertaining or informative. Those tiresomely repeated pics serve neither.

Before the redesign, the "Photos of the Moment" were much easier to view and much more diverse, informative and user-friendly.

BTW, the big maps and pie charts are useless space and data wasters.

Have you been the home page recently? Vertically-oriented photos are no longer cropped in the slideshow...A lot of your other issues aren't really issues either:

Hold down control and click to open a slideshow photo in a new tab (or right click and open in a new tab or window).

If you hover your pointer over the images, you get just as much information as before.

I'm also curious how the ranking "algorithm" works for choosing these photos...

Thanks, Ryan: Control and click to open a new tab does "save" a photo while I can go back to the set of eight from which it came. BTW I had been using pointer to hover over the photo to get caption info.

+ 1 George. If I see a that picture of the chick on enter sandman (5.9) one more time I'm going to assault the data base with low quality but shots of the same route over and over. ( nothing wrong with one but shot btw, but why post 10 versions of the same shot?)

I would also like to add that Blitzo and Brad G are exempt from my photo database complaints... Lets be honest their pictures are always amazing/inspiring.

I just discovered the "Open Slideshow" button, the right-pointing arrow, which opens the relatively large full-frame set of eight on a black background. Looks good. And you can still click on a single pic, to enlarge it further or to get more info.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
