Tagging gear

Okay, here is a fun question.

Given that you have 2 ropes and 200 available feet on each rope. WITHOUT UNTYING THE ANCHOR, what is the furthest the leader can be from the anchor before you can't tag anymore?

Don't forget that you can't untie the anchor and can't clip your aiders end to end.

Well, if both ropes are 200 ft assuming that one is the leaders rope and the other is the haul line, which would be fixed to bags, then he couldn't go more than 50 ft before tagging would require you to untie the anchor? Or is this a trick question...?

Not really a trick question but a tricky question.
Yes, two ropes, one is the lead rope and the other is the haul line. You can't untie the anchor but every other option is open.
C'mon Ryan use your noodle!

I don't really understand aid and I'm only assuming this is some sort of whacked solo-aid technique where the dude needs to bring up extra gear using his tag line because he's too much of a wimp to carry it. I'm also assuming that the bizarre phrasing of "untie the anchor" means he can't untie either his lead line or his tag line from the anchor below him and (making yet another assumption since there are no ground rules in the question) that he can't unclip from the lead line (i.e. free solo). If all of these arbitrary caveats are true then he can tag up from 133' out from the anchor minus some negligable amount of rope used up by tying his lead line to his tag line. This question should be posted to the Taco where it belongs. ;)

Saguaro, nope, you're not being very creative.

The person is not soloing. If he were soloing he could tag right up to the end of a 200 foot pitch.

I think the simple answer (not that there is such) is 125' using the ropes. But sometimes the aiders, slings, or even daisies are used (even hammers) to extend the reach (for light weight stuff).

Very close, nbrown. Can you explain how?

Can the leader untie the lead rope?

At least 200 feet.

leader makes an anchor and unties from the lead line after pulling up all the slack.

Attaches end of lead line to his haul line.

How long would that take to fumble around with?

Better yet, instead of all that BS, Just carry a tag line.

How would you build an anchor if presumably you were out of gear because you needed to tag more?

mucci · · sf ca · Joined Jan 2007 · Points: 655

Tie the last few pieces you placed in the pitch together.

See what I mean? Bunch of hassle.

Have fun with it!

It's just a mind trick!

Climb 100 ft , build a station, take up slack on lead line. Now you have 200 on tag plus 100 from your lead line. Tie in on bite back to lead line. So it's 150. 200 plus 100 divided by 2. Am I right?

BLAH! No pissing!
