WTF Wal-Mart ad in Climbing Mag!!!

On second thought, I just have a hard time swallowing that MasterCard would buy a full page wal-mart ad for the implicit potential business, instead of just buying their own ad. I think these guys pissed powerful people off. Good job, Climbing.

It looks like MP joined the club. I saw a Wal-Mart banner ad on this site yesterday when I was browsing the site on my phone.

WOW what a vision! Creating a brand with useful content to inspire Climbers! I can only imagine what the previous mission statement was.

There is no chance AT ALL that you heard that "great vision" from Shannon Davis and said to yourself "I must join climbing magazine."

You are being disingenuous and spewing marketing drivel. You sound like every other corporate shill to me.

I had no negative feelings towards Climbing mag before I read this completely vapid posting. I will take it with a grain of salt because you might not actually be who you purport to be - and if you are, god help your mag.

Pretty nasty comments.

Can a single one of you vitriol-spewing keyboard warriors explain how Climbing magazine affects you negatively? No? Ok. Carry on. But as long as we're picking random shit to scream about even when it has no bearing on us, can we also hate on McDonald's? I hate their food.

Do you believe he was inspired by that vision?

Or do you believe that he laid down some marketing drivel?

haha I dunno about that, but I have seen quite a few of them on campus. Those guys also wear cowboy boots, so I just assumed they were from WY or something.

OMFG! That entire post was replete with marketing BS, but the part I quoted was especially rich. What it the fuck are the "values and ethics of our sport"? The climbers I know are a VERY diverse group, and the majority of them like "distilled spirits" (is this the early 1900's?) and risqué sexual humor.

yeah, real climbers would never demean climbing techniques or objectives by sullying them with association to the mega-corp....right?

Well I'll be damned. There it is. Mossy Oak, Sprawl Mart, WTF???

I get totally inspired to climb by wal mart ads with dudes in camo and a fake fire.

Jeff,

Here is some hopefully constructive criticism. The how-to/instruction/technique/training type articles are okay in moderation but the magazine is primarily composed of this type of content now. How about more feature articles about climbing destinations? You have to look at your competition. I know you don't want to hear this but you need to be more like Rock and Ice in my opinion. Rock and Ice runs around 82 pages per issue and Climbing runs around 62. Those aren't just 20 more pages of ads. That's content. I hope you turn the magazine around. If I can't be climbing on these cold drizzly winter days at least I can read about it.
