I am finally getting a week off starting December 28th, & I'd like to make it count. What is THE world's greatest climbing in season? I'd like to visit an area with trad, sport, & bouldering. Nowhere is to far. Would prefer if dogs are allowed. Any suggestions?

I do believe Red Rock fulfills all your requirements. Just make sure your dog is bigger than the other ones. Plus NYE Vegas style!

El Potrero Chico has sport, bouldering, and some trad -- though not primarily a trad destination. Dogs are allowed as the area is, essentially, unregulated. I've commonly seen dogs there. Temperatures should be reasonable, too.

Red Rocks would be chilly that time of year, but climbable if you were careful in selecting which face of the cliff you were on to be in the sun and avoid the wind.

I'm sure there's boatloads of stuff in Australia or New Zealand that would be great, as that's summer down there. Same with South America or Africa.

I'd love to go to Potrero Chico, I've been eyeing routes out there for a while. I'm apprehensive about travelling there, I don't know how safe it is.
So far our plan is a frozen-assed trip to Red Rocks / Joshua Tree.
Any other suggestions?

I'd be apprehensive about traveling in Mexico, too. Apprehensive, as in, "won't go." You'll have people telling you it's safe, "do this and you'll be fine," etc., but it's not worth the risk to me. Whatever.

Joshua Tree can be very pleasant in the winter, provided there's not a cold spell like right now and you stay in the sun. Probably true in RR, too.

Coming to Potrero Chico is as safe as going to a movie theatre in Denver. Chances are nothing bad will happen, but, hey, you never know.

Dogs are very welcome here.

I'd love to believe that! My climbing partner is also my fiancé, I can't risk it. What a shame! It would be one thing to just worry about the gangs / murderers, but the fact you can't even trust the cops!? That really kills it for me.

Arapiles in Australia & the American South (Tenessee Wall, Obed, Foster Falls, Horsepens 40) come to mind, or Krabi for just sport climbing, but really I can't seem to stop going to Joshua Tree myself. Lots of fun possibilities & you'll have a great time wherever you go.

I just got back from Potrero on Sunday. It's amazing there, and I didn't feel uncomfortable or insecure for a moment. We drove ourselves in a rental car with no trouble (we did use the pay road). It was a very easy trip. Dogs are defintely welcome. Dottie will even help you out with food if you run low (just make sure to buy a raffle ticket or two). I really can't say enough. Great climbing, great people, no problems. GO!

You must be one of those guys that doesn't let his fiancé lead, to dangerous. Careful with Josh, I hear its a hundred miles from the border.

If my husband ever said this, I'd probably punch him in his juxie.

I don't mean that she is any less capable, or that I am controlling in anyway. In fact I'd feel sorry for any guy who tried to take her on. Just that I worry is all.

Alicia, you didn't even mention that you brought your young son along again this year.

Potrero is where I want to be...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
