First off, if this belongs somewhere else, please let me know (yes, I'm new)!

Anyways, I just visited the 7-11 that is a block away from my apartment. After talking to an employee there, he will be working a 12 hour shift tomorrow. In the past I have worked over Thanksgiving and it sucks.

What I am trying to do is get people to bring somebody that has to work tomorrow a leftover plate of food. We all know there is typically a vast amount of food leftover from the typical Thanksgiving feast. These guys (at least the ones I know), have no choice but to work. Like I said, I have worked over Thanksgiving and other holidays and it can be kind of depressing.

So, just an idea I am throwing out. Sorry if it does not belong here, but I'm new and not too sure if this belongs here or not.

This is a rad idea. Everyone should have thanksgiving and Friday off. Instead, employees have to work death shifts to accommodate ridiculous consumerism. A bit of leftovers could go a long way for someone.

Very nice thought. I am sure that nobody will be bothered in slightest by your post.
Cheers.

It's nice that some people get holidays off. When I was on active duty I got no holiday breaks unless I was scheduled to be off work anyway or I took leave. I worked on Christmas for four years in a row, all 12-hour shifts, all at night. They told me, "Christmas, ha, working for the Navy IS Christmas." ;)

Rad idea though.

I'm always working holidays! Although hospitals will usually feed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. I'm hoping to snag a free breakfast AND dinner today! A couple of years I wished somebody would give me a turkey dinner in times of struggle. Yea share up !

"Death shifts " ? I disagree. Be glad you are given an opportunity to make money . Some people don't get a chance.

Before we spiral away from the real meaning of this post, I agree and will be sharing some of my thanksgiving.

I support the family and free time we all deserve..BUT also think we should support the businesses we love and need for climbing....soooo,
Get online and start your climbing sale shopping today!! I've been online for 2 hours now, to mountaingear and gearexpress so far for deals, sales, undisclosed holiday discounts, etc.
Support those sites....somebody has to sit there online to take the calls and fix the glitches without a nice dinner, so at least make it worth their time!! Isn't shopping the most American thing we can do during Thksgvg and Xmas now anyway? (In the modern America, not the classic thankful family centered one we all miss). Anyway, go shop online at least,,,can be done from your laptop, on your lap, at the dinner table, with a big turkey leg in your other hand.

Shop at your local climbing gear shops and at the gyms. If you shop online it does not support your buddies at the gear shop who work for minimum wage to do something we all are so passionate about. So spend a little more ...you all can afford that extra buck. Show comoraderie why don't you!? Let's all do our Christmas shopping at the local climbing shops this year!

I don't know that having to be at a big box retail store at 1 AM and work a 16 hour shift while trying to avoid being trampled so people can save 50 bucks on a flat screen TV for $8.50 an hour qualifies as some sort of golden opportunity.

Bickering about semantics aside, it's a great idea throw someone working over the next two days some good food. Maybe even sit down with them for 5 minutes and share some of that meal, assuming they can take a 5 minute break without their boss pulling them back into the FoxCon factory. I'm sure they are wishing they could be sharing a nice meal with friends and family and some random kindness from a stranger could do a lot to lift someone's spirits.

+1,,, I do agree we should support local stores. They are number one for us. Unfortunately I have none near me, so the 'net is my support system.

I bet you those people would rather be making that 8.50 an hour...If they did not they would quit their jobs. It's called doing the best you can and being responsible. Those things are alien to this site and unfortunately climbers are far from it. Unless they are making money for the next climbing trip of course. Then they would rather work too! It's the country of opportunities. The concept many of you can not grasp.

I'm not even going to engage in this off topic thread drift. Give someone a meal and have empathy for people who have to work on a holiday that the vast majority of people spend with their friends and family.

Just make sure that when you deliver the food, you don't also deliver a plate full of Salmonella or some other fucked up shit.

and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to one and ALL!

Why 'should' everyone have Thanksgiving and Friday off Birdman? Shouldn't they be allowed to choose their own paths in life , choose their level of education , choose their own ways to making a living ?

And in that 16 hour shift they are making overtime and then double time. Check with the workers working Thanksgiving (when u drop off that plate of food) to see if they all oppose it as much as you think they do .
