IMO the best thing MP does is to keep obscure and forgotten routes and areas on our radar. Guidebooks are coming out less frequently than ever, especially for areas like Ojai (where I live). MANY lines here would be forgotten and fall into neglect if it was not for the proj'.

I'm reading my Vertical Times (Access Fund newsletter) which just arrived in my mailbox...

At the end, I see the donor section, and I see Mountain Project in the Platinum section ($10,000+). May not have been a cash donation, but still...

Are you a Access Fund member? If not, why not? accessfund.org

I don't think MP is obligated (that wasn't suggested, I know) to give anything back. If they do, good for them. If it's just for our consumption and not some greater good, that's fine, too. It's a good website for climbers and that's enough for me.

Ask not what your website can do for you, but what can you do for your website...

Actually, if nobody noticed, the non-profits are getting some nice backing from MP.com, the community calendar has been great, and the L&F section gets a lot of gear returned.

Also, if you are writing a guidebook, the resource here beats the S out of the various collections of scribbled notes you may or may not find at the local gear shops.

MP is the community:

Place to hang out.

An opportunity to ask others for advice.

I find that MP.com provides an easy to access location for socially inept, attention deprived and/or cantankerous individuals to find self worth through sarcasm and personal attacks.

THANK YOU MP.com!

Well one thing it (along with the other climbing forums) has done is to outfit a climbing gym in a poor community with used climbing shoes through the generosity of the climbing community. Without the forum I would never have been able to reach out to so many people who have helped so many young men and women. So instead of kids in tennies, socks, or barefoot struggling and losing interest quickly we now have these same kids climbing hard routes, having more fun, and occasionally ending up going on to climbing outdoors.

I am not sure… but it makes Climbing Magazine and R&I pretty much obsolete. Alpinist is still relevant.
